Let’s start with Hill, since his signing is official and all of the details of his deal are already out. The Lions tight end signed a deal initially reported as a one-year, $1.2 million contract. That is an accurate portrayal of the contract, but it will actually cost the Lions less against the cap. Here’s the breakdown, courtesy of NFL insider Aaron Wilson:

Total value: $1.212 million ($987,500 guaranteed)

Base salary: $1.075 million ($850,000 guaranteed)
Signing bonus: $137,500

The veteran salary benefit allow teams to offer a “Qualifying Contract” to any player with at least four credited seasons at a reduced salary cap hit. Under this provision, a qualifying contract is a one-year deal worth the minimum base salary applicable to a player with his number of credited seasons, plus $137,500 in additional compensation (i.e., signing bonus, roster bonus, incentive, etc. — amount begins to increase in 2022). These contracts are charged against the salary cap at the rate of a player with two credited seasons that league year.

Spending a bunch of money on Prater while we're just starting a rebuild isn't smart spending. About the time were getting competitive(realistically 2 or 3 years) Prater will be ready to retire or retired and i'd rather we struggle finding our next kicker now than when it's put up or shut up time for our new regime.

The Lions committed to Goff a little longer, but they finally have some cap space to maneuver.

Per Yates, the Lions have converted $20 million of Goff’s $25.325 million base salary for the 2021 season into a signing bonus. This gives Goff that $20 million in pocked immediately, while spreading that $20 million of cap hit across the next four seasons.

In other words, the Lions just cleared up $15 million in cap space

Of course, there are long-term ramifications of this move now. The signing bonus is now spread over the next four seasons, adding $5 million to his cap hit for 2022, 2023, and 2024. Whereas Goff had no potential dead cap beyond 2022, now he has $10 million of dead cap in 2023 and $5 million in dead cap in 2024 if the Lions decide to part ways with him.
