To give you an idea of how much those cap hits compare to the rest of the league, here’s where Goff ranks among quarterbacks in cap hit per year.

2021: $10.625M — 17th
2022: $31.25M — 9th
2023: $30.65M — 7th
2024: $31.65 —4th (only five QBs signed through 2024)

Imagine that

Detroit Lions restructure Jared Goff’s contract, create $15M in cap space for 2021 - Pride Of Detroit
The Lions committed to Goff a little longer, but they finally have some cap space to maneuver.

Per Yates, the Lions have converted $20 million of Goff’s $25.325 million base salary for the 2021 season into a signing bonus. This gives Goff that $20 million in pocked immediately, while spreading that $20 million of cap hit across the next four seasons.

In other words, the Lions just cleared up $15 million in cap space

Of course, there are long-term ramifications of this move now. The signing bonus is now spread over the next four seasons, adding $5 million to his cap hit for 2022, 2023, and 2024. Whereas Goff had no potential dead cap beyond 2022, now he has $10 million of dead cap in 2023 and $5 million in dead cap in 2024 if the Lions decide to part ways with him.
I hate this a lot. Free walk option after 2022 was valuable imo

meh, free walk option in 2023 will now cost 10M.

Holmes must believe in Goff and would think he has more knowledge into that situation with McVay/Goff than the media or fans. I could see Holmes explaining to Sheila, Campbell and Lynn as to why Goff succeeded at first and then the reasons for the decline.

BTW, McVay clearly stated that when the LAR had Brandin Cooks, Goff was at his best. ? Waddle maybe ?

I hate losing big money to dead cap but tbh, I fully anticipated this move.

I was never a fan of Goff's play whether it was at Cal or with the LAR.

NFL free agency: Detroit Lions sign former Browns WR Damion Ratley - Pride Of Detroit

Ratley was a 2018 sixth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns back when John Dorsey was their general manager.

In his three years in the NFL, Ratley has made 31 game appearances and six starts. In that time, he’s caught just 29 passes for 407 yards and a touchdown.

Ratley becomes the fourth new wide receiver the Lions are adding this free agency period. They’ve already signed Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman, and they’ll reportedly be signing Kalif Raymond, as well.

All four of these signings have one thing in common: Speed. Like the rest of them, Ratley has speed in spades, reportedly running a 4.39 40-yard dash during his pro day three years ago.

I like these signings so far. Keeping it to the cheap 1 year deals was what I had been hoping for.

Do the 3rd round picks given out for diversity hires count against the total number of comps given? I wonder if it could bump the Golladay to a 4th

not at all. there will still exist 32 comp picks for players loss in UFA.
those comp picks - minority hiring - come after picks awarded for loss of UFA player

I guess I am in the minority. I dont mind spreading this out a couple more years. 5 mill will be peanuts compared to the increase in the cap in the next 4 years.

I'm not complaining about Goff's restructure. Should he be cut in the first day of new league year 2023 it's 10M. Should it be the first day of new league year 2024 it's 5M.

The new TV deal doesn't take affect until new league year 2023. 110B over those 11 years. I expect 2022 cap space to rebound to slightly over 200M then a big cap space raise in 2023.

Hell, most of us on here would be willing to cut bait with Trey Flowers after 2021 if he doesn't perform and that'd cost 12.8M with a slightly over 10M savings.

If we're willing to cut bait on a pass rusher with 12.8M dead cap then it shouldn't be a big deal to cut bait with a 10M dead cap on a QB in 2023.

approximately 25M in current cap space, not including Anzalone and Ratley, we're not in real great territory.

Draft capitol costs a net of 3M (7.4M total but last 6 on top 51 drop off once signed - about 4M net cost on those dropping off)
Practice Squad 2021 net of 2M
2021 IR replacement net of 6-8M
---------------------------------------
Total net 11M-13M

leaves approximately 12M-14M to sign other 2021 UFA or a carryover to 2022.

Details emerge on rocky relationship between Jared Goff, Sean McVay - Pride Of Detroit

Why the Sean McVay-Jared Goff partnership fell apart for Los Angeles Rams (espn.com)

The latter article outlines a toxic relationship between McVay/Goff.

McVay expected Goff to be better and take the lead after losing OL Saffold and Sullivan to FA, injury to RT Havenstein and the demise of Gurley not to mention trading away Goff's outlet of WR Brandin Cooks.

Four QB coaches in four years for Goff and McVay never replaced anyone at the OC position once LeFleur left for GB.

BB_72: quotes from article
Gurley, the 2017 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, had knee issues, and McVay struggled to consistently incorporate the run in the game plan.

"The situation around him affected his game. If the O-line wasn't always firing or if he was missing a wide receiver, things didn't go well," a team source said. "If he had a clean pocket and everything was going perfect, he's a top-five quarterback."

On the sideline, where emotional outbursts are not uncommon, "It gradually became more hostile, with McVay cussing out Goff, and Goff would feel crushed," a league source said.
