What is their plan beyond Ben? Wait until next year to draft someone? Sign Alex Smith as insurance?

Realistically... how much can we save?
Whatever they feel comfortable with. He could count for $2MM this year and then $13MM dead cap hits the next three years after he's gone.

That's a wide open question. Probably not going to be aggressive to try and get a QB in this draft, unless something crazy happens and one of the top guys just falls in their lap.

If they want this shot to work, Ben needs a run game. That means OL, an RB and a TE that can block.

I'd skip the top RB's and get Javonte Williams in 2 or 3.

That dead cap impairs the "build the base behind a cheap young QB" standard plan unfortunately.

We'll see soon what the actual compromise against the future is going to be.

But, the two years after Ben is gone are going to be weird, rebuilding years.

The real shit hitting the fan is when they try to sign Watt and the going rate is 30-35 million a year.

Honestly, I'd prefer to try to trade him.

I want to see the details, what the actual cap hit is.

He has a prorated bonus of 22,250,000 that was already paid to him. A base salary of 4,000,000 and a roster bonus of 15,000000.

Considering he was already paid 22,250,000 whatever his new contract is can't be less than that, otherwise, he's paying them back millions of dollars.

Wow. I was hoping since "his salary didn't matter at all" there might have been a bigger discount.

Still. A starting QB of his caliber (even at this stage) 14 million is a steal.
Don’t be fooled. As we’ve mentioned before, this restructure is all about spreading out the cap hit. He’s not taking a pay cut. Even if his base pay is less it doesn’t mean they didn’t just roll that change into a bonus to soften the cap hit.

Devil is in the details. LMAO at anyone thinking his reduced base pay means he took a pay cut.
