2 things

1. The 2021 cap isn't set.
2. The NFL is looking at all options going forward including a possible cap increase.

However, in the latest episode of Pro Football Network’s NFL Draft Insiders podcast, Chief Draft Analyst and Insider Tony Pauline shed some more light on the situation. Pauline stated that currently, it is thought that the NFL would use a system of borrowing against future caps to protect the 2021 salary cap from a sharp drop. In fact, Pauline even stated that the NFL’s salary cap could potentially rise a small amount to $200 million in 2021.

The whole cap thing pisses me off as a Cowboy fan. I had to endure all the bullshit yankee power grabs as a Texas Ranger fan. Jerry has the money to buy any player he wants but no.....

I was just throwing out other ideas on how to approach this whole thing. talking out loud type thing.

Dak may kill us in just a few years. I don't think he will but I have learned that how bad contracts can set a team back eons. I think the last rookie one was Jamarcus russel and what he did to the Raiders. The Galloway trade killed us because it hung that money around our neck. He was good but not that good.
The Galloway trade hurt because of the price it took to get him, not the money paid to him.

I get it. The League was afraid of what Dallas, SF and Washington were willing to pay players so they came up with the cap. I'm not a cap fan but it's here and it's staying so I'm going to live with it.

Well it was both. He was eating up 10%ish of the cap every year. the years we had him he had a total of 12 TDs. The 2 number ones given up never help a team.

For sure. Doesn't mean I can't complain.

I was so looking forward to seeing Randy Moss and Irvin as our receivers. This is why some coaches should not be shopping for groceries. Chan Gailey passed on a hall of Famer and we ended up with Ellis. While Ellis was good he was never a true impact player that could take over games. That Galloway trade did not need to happen if we took BPA.

Not defending Gailey, or anyone else involved in that draft, but you do know that Irvins antics and Moss's behavior is the reason Dallas passed on him.
The whole White House and drug reports scared the Cowboys about Moss.

The salary cap has been good for the NFL. There is a level playing field now.

It was good for the teams who didn't want to spend.
The salary cap is good for all teams. The smart franchises are able to stay below the cap number. Some teams prefer to improve via the draft and use free agency very infrequently.

The cap actually hurts teams who have drafted well, so there's a big hole in your draft philosophy.

Dallas Cowboys are in that situation right now. Do you think they wanted to see Bryon Jones in Miami?
Maybe they shouldn't have thrown all that money at Zeke. It's the bad decisions that always come back to bite you.

Every team hits the salary cap. So instead of paying a person x amount of dollars the contract should read the player gets X percent of the cap. If cap goes up, they get more $$. If goes down then less.

Just looking at alternatives. The player has to bet on himself but the team has to bet with the other players in mind too.

I cant see that working. If you mean every player on the team are equally paid, you're paying UDFA's the same as you're paying a Russell Wilson, or if you mean each position gets a certain percent, it still won't work with all teams not being built equally, and you'll be paying a draft pick QB the same as a Russell Wilson
I think the way Salaries are done should be blown up & started over. Under the current way of doing things I think using percentages would be poison.
However if you made all positions by percentages. (plenty of data out there to get accurate averages)
1st string QBs say were 17% 2nd string whatever & 3rd & beyond all the same.
Same with all the positions 1st string more than 2nd, which is more than 3rd & beyond.

Then if Salary cap is 210 million. Figure out about how much on avg is used by signing bonuses. lets just pretend that was 60 mil. the cap for the top 53 is 150 mil in salaries (when you add all the percentages together) Leaves 60 mil every year to give as bonuses to whatever guys or positions the teams want. Wouldnt be negotiating salaries anymore. Just who gets the piece of the bonus pie every year. makes everyone Earn their pay & wouldnt be hearing someone was under paid. Since if some is promoted to the starting job. their game check would be for that 1st string money. if you lost your starting job because you sucked. Your game check would go down to whatever string you fell too. No more Rookie contracts either. As they would be just getting whatever string they played at money. Also 1st year rookies wouldnt be getting signing bonuses. Cap goes up pay goes up. Pay goes up. Cap goes down. Pay goes down. Players unions can adjust how they see the percentages every 4 years or whatever. Also if they feel they need to take away from bonuses in the percentage adjustment or add to the bonuses that could be done in the same 4 years or whatever.
Now you are not paying a ton of money to some player that sucks. At worst they got you for whatever bonuses you paid them.

Now I know this would never happen, because while all football players act like the are all in this together. They are not. The Elites will want all they can get by hurting the non elites. But I wish we could have some form of this. Go back to the old days of players earning their money.

Yes, but Jerry chose to overpay him which left less money for other positions of need.
I agree Zeke is over paid but probably not so overpaid that Brown is saved, not to mention Vander-Eshe will also get his soon. Fact is Dallas will miss out on keeping some of thier own due to the cap.
