NBA lifts 'big middle finger to the NCAA' with move to secure top hoops prospects

The symbolic loss of Green is much more important than the singular loss of Green, as the creation of a new avenue for top prospects by Silver is a crushing blow to the sport of college basketball. Make no mistake, the NBA announced with alacrity today that they’re in the business of courting and developing the top American basketball players. This is a distinct pivot point in the history of American basketball.

“I think the NBA is doing it as a big middle finger to the NCAA,” said a prominent NBA agent. “This is how it’s going to be, we’re going to take control of the development of top players.”

Are more coming? You bet. The NBA has thrown down the gauntlet, as Evans expects a half-dozen of the top high school players to end up in the G League developmental program this year.

If im a top recruit and my family doesnt need the money im still going to college. No one watches or gives a shit about the G league, no kid grows up dreaming of making a game winning shot for the Ft Wayne Mad Ants in the G league playoffs.

Now if my family is dirt poor then thats different.

From article...

A sport that’s seen elite star power like Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose and Zion Williamson the past two decades will instead be led by Luka Garzas...

Was Melo in the first year of mandatory college?

No, he was in the prep to pros era. Could have left from high school but decided to spend a year in school.

I also wonder why if these kids and their families have no interest in attending college, why it takes them so long to make a goddamn decision on the school.

Just pick the P5 school that's closest where you'll start, or has the coolest campus or best hotties and be done with it...

If I knew I was going to have a wife for a year and only a year, then I just go with the hottest one there is, and be done with the decision...

Same. Going to the NBA would be different. But unless you really need that 500K one year ahead of time, i don’t see how college isn’t better.

You are national tv exposed for almost every game. There is an entire month dedicated to your sport.

The expose builds so much hype for a lot of these rookies that then enter the league

Don't really understand how it helps the NBA.

Nobody watches or follows the G-League so those kids aren't making them $. You pay a kid 500K to be in the G-League, he could still be the next bust. But it's a cost to them. It's not like it's coming out of a team owner's pocket.

They should want college basketball to do that job for them. It's cheaper and easier.
Yep. The NFL has the most efficient development league possible in CFB. The largest majority of potential busts coming out of high school do so in college. NFL doesn't have to risk it.

My guess is that they feel it increases the interest in the G-League and they want to build its profile and profitability. I imagine this new team is going to get a lot of interest and exposure.

Of course it's kids that were signed up to go to Michigan and UCLA that bolt for the G League. And Green was probably going to Auburn. So when the hell are all the Duke and UK players gonna do that? :dhd:

Arizona St and central Florida would be perennial final four contenders if they did that....

This won't hurt the NCAA. Kids used to skip college to go to the NBA all the time. College basketball will always have a big stage.

off the top of my head, America is the only country that relies on colleges to develop talent for their most prominent sports. it's actually insane when you think about it

why change it up now? is it because they're pissed at the NCAA for the "No more corrupt uncles can serve as agents for these kids" rule?

the paragraph about how the NBA wants to be in charge of development for the top american prospects speaks volumes. It reads to me that the NBA isn't thrilled with the prospect of Europeans being the new faces of the NBA
