Sources: Beltran stepping down as Mets manager

Carlos Beltran, the only player named in MLB's investigation of the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal, will step down as manager of the New York Mets before beginning his first season with the team, sources confirmed to ESPN's Jeff Passan on Thursday.

Yahoo Sports was the first to report that Beltran was stepping down.

"Approximately two months into the 2017 season, a group of players, including Carlos Beltrán, discussed that the team could improve on decoding opposing teams' signs and communicating the signs to the batter," said MLB's report, which was issued Monday.

The scheme they devised involved using trash cans and video cameras to send out signals to hitters. No player received any discipline from MLB for the sign-stealing scheme.

The Mets signed Beltran Nov. 1 to a three-year deal with an option for a fourth season. It was his first job as a major league manager.

A nine-time All-Star during 20 major league seasons, Beltran finished his major-league career with the Astros in 2017 and spent 2018 as an adviser to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.

Beltran, 42, played for the Mets from 2005 to 2011.

He can now retire as one of the best Mets' managers ever.....he never lost a game......Wally Backman would be a good choice to replace, level headed, cool, calm and collected.....

You seem to have this backwards?

The Mets, when they hired him, had no idea he was balls-deep in a cheating scandal. For once, people should actually feel bad for the team. They made what they thought was a decent hire and it didn't work out because the guy turned out to be tainted

Boy, this might just be the most "Mets" thing ever.

And lemme tell you, that's saying something.

The most Mets thing ever is when he goes on to be a Hall of Fame manager with another team.

Yeah, that would be a kick in the knickers...but I really can't blame the team here.

not laughing at them for the hiring and firing of beltran… I mean I am... But only because it just adds to the list of mistakes that only the mets can make... whether they knew about it or not...

if this was any other team, we wouldn't be laughing at them...

But Beltran I almost see as a victim... Not quite like a victim... But still...

I loved him as a player (except for one night in 2006), was lukewarm on him as a manager, but now he can fuck right off.

This goes right along with them closing Shea after missing the playoffs on the last day of the season rather than having the ceremony before to fire up the crowd. Much better to wait until you've been eliminated and have half the crowd leave before hand and the half that stayed pissed.
That and trading Seaver for a deli guy and a couple of bell hops
