Calling Burfict a thug seems reasonable. Calling ISIS thugs is reasonable. OTOH, calling Richard Sherman a thug is NOT reasonable. Beillein calling his players thugs is NOT reasonable. That's the problem.

The word thug became a euphemism for criminal. Accusing someone of being a criminal who has done nothing criminal is a bad look.

I always though of thug as another word for goon. Not necessarily a criminal but someone who resorts to violence all the time or that likes to hurt people. Later it got the criminal connotation you mentioned and later than that the racial aspect began. But let's not forget "Thug Life" was a hip hop thing, there were bands like "Thugs, Bones and Harmony" so I can see why it would be more associated with blacks.
