Your best case scenario requires a repeat of Odor being hurt with no Solak to play in his place, and no good option for 3B. It also requires no good option for 1B and for the OF to be an unsettled situation. Those are the things that require someone like Santana to play all of those positions. That seems to take the "best" out of "best case scenario" to me.

Also, if he is a starter in mostly one position or if he is a starter spread over 5 positions, doesn't he get just as "overexposed?"
Ok Uncle....

Granted any best case scenario should not want players injured. And even an "overexposed" Santana is IMO better than an
"any exposed" DDJ and better than Gallo wore out in CF for an extended time. Plus to fill CF via FA is non existent. We would have to trade.

Trades could change this team though especially if starters involved. Seems like we tender players this week

Well we could probably trade Mazara and a package for a CF and move Gallo to RF, sign a 3rd baseman and play Guzman at 1st. Still leaves us needing a catcher and a SP

Mazara and a package could get us just about anything, as long as the package is worth a whole lot.

With Huff, Apostle, Terry, Jung, Wendzel, Taveras, Crouse, Winn, and Vanasco all scheduled to arrive in early 2022, and with Palumbo, Burke, Hearn, Allard, Tejeda, and Phillips arriving sometime in the next 4 to 16 months, I wonder how that impacts FA and trades.

To me that means you don't have to make any desperate trades, and you don't have to overpay for stopgap solutions that will only help in the next couple of years. Get a prize FA each year and one or two solid FA.

Another wave of talent should be making their presence known in Frisco and Nashville in a couple of years also. That wave should give us the talent we need to make a trade to acquire a final piece or two.

If we handle this well and don't make any dumb moves, like with Hamels and Lucroy, we should be setting ourselves up for a prolonged window as well as fielding some very competitive teams in the interim.

The Washington Post reported in September that the Nats offered Rendon a seven-year deal in the $210 million-$215 million range with deferrals similar to Scherzer’s, to be paid within seven years of the end of the contract.

Players generally look at the totality of a deal, focusing on its present-day value. Deferrals lower the present-day value, and some players want their money sooner rather than later, reasoning they should get the chance to invest it, not the club.

Maybe 7 years with the money not so much deferred will get it done

Sullivan mentioned the Rangers not wanting to go past 5 years. That would mean we would never be a candidate for the best free agents. I hope he is wrong about that.

I have to think about that one. So many on this board thought Choo was a great signing at 7 years because of his OB pct and so on and now many have been griping about having his contract weighing this team down for the past few years. 7 years is a lot to swallow.

I never cared for the Choo signing ti begin with. To me, him then and Rendon now are completely different.

Choo will be 38 a few weeks before his contract is finished. Rendon will be 36 when his contract is finished if he signs for 7 years.

with Jung, Wendzel and Apostel, I would offer one of Wendzel or Apostel. maybe Florentino, Henriquez, Acosta and a pitcher or 2(Jurado, Mendez etc) and see what drops from the trees

If so you were in the minority. I love Rendon and I am not saying we shouldn't pull the trigger but you go beyond 5 you do have to be cautious.

the JD plan all along. every other team offers 6, 7 or 8 years to a top FA and the Rangers offer 3, 4 or 5 years with close to a similar AAV and when the FA chooses another team he comes out with "well we made what we felt was a viable offer and they chose to sign else where." bigtime FA's are looking long term deals so they can close out their careers with one team and not wanting to move around every few years so the Rangers will miss out on 95% of them.
don't expect to see them come close on Cole, Rendon, Strassburg, Wheeler or Ryu and see us signing much lower level FA's on short term deals like Donaldson, Moustakas, Miley, Mller, Wacha etc

any offer from the Rangers that doesn't start at 7 years and 34.25M AAV will be placed in the ignore pile by Rendon/Boros

I wasn't on this board at the time, but I didn't care for the whole way that offseason went. That is when we should have begun to rebuild if we weren't going to go all in on free agency.

I was banished from this board at the time.

7 years is a bad idea for a lot of guys, but exceptions come along sometimes. I firmly believe Rendon is an exception. In fact, if they had to go 8 years with him to get him here I wouldn't have a problem with it.
