If you have a player on your team that experiences cramps that result in gameplay being stopped, I think we need to up the time required for that player to remain off of the field.

Be it the rest of the series or an established number of plays, I think something needs to be done. Too many occurrences happening at pivotal moments of games.

What say you lot?

Think it should be a possession/series.

Maybe give each team 6 timeouts per half, and charge a team a timeout when a player is down.

If they don't have any timeouts left, then it's a delay of game penalty.

They also need a rule that either puts time back on clock or gives offense an untimed down so defense just can't get away with holding and PI. Also, if leading team commits a penalty, the clock starts on snap.

Once you come out, you should be out for the series unless your team burns a TO
Not until your team burns a timeout but i like the idea, a timeout will allow them to re-enter if taken during/following the injury

When the opposing team takes the penalty instead of the play, the clock starts on the snap.

When the opposing team takes the penalty instead of the play, the clock starts on the snap.

That gives the leading team an incentive to commit a penalty because the defense has to use two timeouts for the same down.

Why would they be using a timeout at all? When they take the penalty instead of the play the clock is stopped until the ball is snapped.

Unless I'm mistaken and the issue has been corrected since I first noticed it, I have seen the defense take a penalty and the clock starts on ready for play. I swear I saw this happen last week but can't remember what game. Even if they don't take the penalty, they should have the option to stop clock until snap.

Did the play count? (ie, roughing the passer added on)

I'll need to watch for it again to see if I'm imagining things. I do remember awhile back that Iowa needed a defensive stop and had to use two timeouts for the same down following an offensive penalty after a first down run and the other team was able to run out the clock.

Rest of series would be fair.

I like the idea of if they dont use a timeout during/for the injury then the whole series :D Lets write our university presidents and get the NCAA to implement this, it is especially annoying to high powered HUNH Offenses

It's possible that the refs messed it up. Here's what the NCAA rulebook has to say about it:

Unfair Clock Tactics
ARTICLE 3.
The referee has broad authority in the timing of the game. He shall order the game clock or play clock started or stopped whenever either team conserves or consumes playing time by tactics obviously unfair. This includes starting the game clock on the snap if the foul is by the team ahead in the score. If the game clock is stopped to complete a penalty for a foul by the team ahead in the score (or either team if the score is tied) inside the last two minutes of a half, it will start on the snap, at the option of the offended team. The game clock will start on the ready-for-play signal after Team A throws an illegal forward or backward pass to conserve time (Rule 3-3-2-e-14) (A.R. 3-4-3-I-V).

Won’t work. Then players would just grab their ankle or something else. Basically you’d have to change the rules if you take a play off for injury you’d have to sit out multiple plays or sit out the series.
