So with the elimination of August waiver trades do teams that are out of it like the M's just waive players whose contracts end at the end of the year in hopes of a team claiming them and paying the remainder of the years salary and to also open up a roster spot?

Take Beckham for instance; why keep him if he has no future past this season and is a horrible outfielder and basically is taking time away from the kids? You have over half the teams in this same situation and you would think each of those teams has at least one guy in the same position.

Do you release Felix if he makes it back so to give him a chance to play for a contender if one would even pick him up in a September call up situation?

I think it will be interesting test of the new rule which I don't think I like at this point sense we are sellers.

I think if Felix is foolish to even try and come back they should cut him. Someone in the hunt will snag him, they wont think about the money owed it will be the fact they have a shot at the playoffs .

He pitches in Everett on Friday so it looks like he is trying to come back.

The August waiver being eliminated is just another example of how idiotic Manfred is. Let’s take something that can juice fan bases up like the waiver deadline and eliminate it. If he had half of a brain or care for the sport he would’ve made the trade deadline August 15th. July 31st is too early for organizations to decide if they are in or out when they have the wild card.

I swear to god he is the worst commissioner in any professional sport and has no clue on how to try to grow the sport. Instead he just a commissioner that seems his entire goal is to destroy baseball and line himself up for another commissioners gig.

I guess the plus side of that is, if he actually does come back and pitches well, then you hope he generates a buzz about himself and you cut him, eat the salary and just end the divorce and hope someone picks him up.

I swore I saw a tweet on Sunday they put him on the 60 day DL.....

They did but he's been out for that long already so he can come back soon.

Not bad and if Kikuchi is mediocre again next year, i think they are really only tied to him thru 2021 so they can get out of that soon. But then again relationship with Japan and shit

That's a good question. I think the contractual obligation part will be minimal since roughly 70% of the season is over. With the Mariners, they still need someone to play at the majors and they might be reluctant to call up replacements if they believe they need more seasoning in the majors. Beckham for example is probably only owed another $500k or so. He's also still under team control until 2021 so there could be a possibility they try to trade him after the season ends.

I doubt the Mariners release Felix just for sentimental/PR reasons. I also think they'll try to milk him for a few more starts for the end of the year because they can fill the "King's Court" and send him off on a good note.

Also I don't think any team that has built a contender would waste a roster spot on Felix at this point. I personally wouldn't. He would be a serious liability.

At least we will have financial flexibility going forward. I'm just crossing my fingers that it's used appropriately. I think that the Mariners not getting stupid with the extra money they'll have to spend is a crucial part of the long-term success that many aren't talking about. It would be unfortunate if the team just started spending a bunch of money on free agents who are in their prime then will become a liability when/if the team contends and they're constrained financially in what they're able to do.

TLDR: Don't give some massive contract to a player over 30 who will be out of their prime in our "window"

I think juicing the ball is one of the dumbest mistakes made in sports history.

I said this in a previous post but I get more excited over an infield hit, bunt for a base hit, stolen base/hit and run than I do from a home run. The increase in home runs has put a serious limit on the balls put in play which sort of ruins the fun of the game and actually makes it slower.

I believe it's retroactive to when he was first put on the DL.

I'm willing to look aside from Kikuchi's struggles.

It's his first year pitching in the majors, he lost his father and he has to make the drastic cultural adjustment to living in America. Culturally speaking, among developed nations the cultural difference between the United States and Japan is probably one of the biggest in the world. Not to mention the fact that in Japan pitchers are trained, conditioned and treated vastly different than in the United States. There are obviously cases of pitchers from Japan who made the transition well, but I assume things will get better with him.

Yes he is Arb eligible for 2020 then free agent in 2021, but M's would have to offer him Arb this off season I order to trade him and if no takers they would be on the hook for about $2M for next year which I doubt they want to do.

Yeah someone mentioned that already........

I got $20 says he has set back in rehab stint and never sees the field again this year!

Any takers?

I think it's mostly up to the front office. I don't think he doesn't want to pitch as he'd see it as an audition for next year.

Not gonna take the bet because I think him not pitching again this year is a strong possibility.

Yeah that's possible. I'm not sure though. He has a decent bat and can play a number of different positions and $2m is pretty cheap. I think that's relatively standard for a vet utility player.

Yes, but he is a disaster defensively at SS and a disaster defensively in the OF so he really has no value over Moore, Nola, or even Court. His bat to me is a big swing and miss. I have zero doubt he will be elsewhere next year...or maybe even in the next month or so this year.
