Players have to use the leverage they have. Teams rarely volunteer to extend players early and plenty of players have used this tactic to get guaranteed money early.
Players on rookie contracts has zero leverage.
Couple that with the fact the Chargers has other RBs to get the job done while he holds out. Think it is a dumb move on his part.
If he gets an extension, it is because he was gonna get one anyways. I dont think this dog & pony show is actually helping him.

Think what you want, but David Johnson the example i used did the same thing last year and got his extension early and plenty of other players have done it in the past. Its in the teams best interest to have their players ready to go and happy when the season starts.

I fully agree especially with RBs. extend them early while there is still rubber on the tires.

I just disagree with strong arm tactics when you are under contract.

When he was on the field he was one of the most effective offensive weapons in the league last year. 222 touches 68 1st downs and 14 TDs and he was only on the field for about half of the teams offensive snaps. He should get a 3 year extension similar to what David Johnson got 3 years 39 million with some incentives that could push it up to around 14.5 per year.
well 1/4 seasons isnt bad. and 3 other seasons YPC under 4

If I were the Chargers I wouldnt have a problem extending him. My problem is him threatening to hold out. I would be headstrong about players attempting that on my team.
you'd pay him big time? off one season?

if the chargers plan is to keep him. It is best to extend while on the 5 yr. rookie contract. you can blend signing bonus into the cheap years of the rookie contract. & get the use out of the RB while he is still in his 20's before they start to break down.
If the Chargers dont plan on keeping him long term then no. he would get nothing.

Who cares as long as he doesn't turn the ball over(0 in the last 2 seasons), is moving the chains, and is scoring he had 80 1sts(3rd overall) and 12 TDs in 2017.

His problem is the Chargers have capable backs not named Gordon.
Yeah Gordon had a 5.1 y/a but Ekeler has a 5.2 behind the same line.
They are saying if Gordon holds out Ekeler & Jackson will tow the line.
he has 50 recpt.
Ekeler & Jackson has 54. On avg. if Ekeler was passed to the same amount of time he would have avg. 49 catches.
Reliability on catches all of them are in the 70's
Gordon 75.8%
Ekeler 73.6%
Jackson 78.9%

I am pretty sure the Chargers would be thinking they would do just fine without him.
This is the only season Gordon has broke the 4 yard/att barrier. Maybe he should feel good he is on a team with quality OL/offense.
Maybe the Chargers think he is merely a product of the offense around him.
Maybe they should let him walk after this contract is up. Until then get his ass out there & play or rot on the bench. Nothing in his stats sceam you cant live without.
885 yds rush & 490 rec. isnt hard to replace. In fact they already have players on the team to do it if need be.

The team rushed for 1873 yards. hes accounted for 47% of the team rushing yards. The RBs that would hurt to lose should probably be around 70% of the total rushing yards. Not under 50%

In fact the more I look into this guy. I not even sure I would want to overpay to extend him.

I think he has kind of screwed himself.

Was just looking at the numbers last night

Was looking at offensive snap numbers and rushing/receiving 1st downs from 2018

Ranked by 1st downs with a TD TB

Gurley GP 14, OS 825, 1st 96, TD 21
Zeke GP 15, OS 890, 1st 96, TD 9
McCaffrey GP 16, OS 965, 1st 94, TD 13
Kamara GP 15, OS 657, 1st 88, TD 18
Hopkins GP 16, OS 1084, 1st 81, TD 11
Julio GP 16, OS 818, 1st 81, TD 8
Barkley GP 16, OS 853, 1st 80, TD 15
Conner GP 13, OS 718, 1st 76, TD 13
M Thomas GP 16, OS 927, 1st 75, TD 9
Thielen GP 16, OS 1011, 1st 75, TD 9
R Woods GP 16, OS 1041, 1st 75, TD 7
Mixon GP 14, OS 596, 1st 74, TD 9
D Johnson GP 16, OS 749, 1st 73, TD 10
Evans GP 16, OS 940, 1st 69, TD 8
Juju GP 16, OS 960, 1st 69, TD 7
M Gordon GP 12, OS 524, 1st 68, TD 14
Tyreek GP 16, OS 905, 1st 68, TD 13
Kelce GP 16, OS 933, 1st 68, TD 10
Carson GP 14, OS 454, 1st 68, TD 9

Gordon has averaged 5+ 1sts per game, 0 turnovers, and nearly a TD a game over the last 2 seasons(don't have any numbers for before that) if the Chargers think thats easily replaceable they're fools.

He plays for a team with an angry, depleted fanbase, with home locker rooms in small soccer stadium.

Eli straight up wasn't going to be a Charger.

Maybe Gordon has decided they will be payinh a tax, or he won't be one anymore?

From PFF:

Gordon, like all backs in the NFL, can’t avoid the fact that his rushing production is largely replaceable and his production as a pass-catcher is volatile. His value is low as a result.

BEGOL-1024x576.png

New Orleans Saints’ Alvin Kamara, arguably the NFL’s most dynamic pass-catching back, led all running backs in PFF’s Wins Above Replacement (WAR) metric. He and 12 other backs finished ahead of Gordon in WAR in 2018, including the likes of Day 3 picks (e.g. Tarik Cohen, Chris Carson), a UDFA (Matt Breida) and his own teammate in Austin Ekeler. And that’s just comparing him to others at his position. Not even Kamara cracked the top-40 among all NFL players in WAR as the position leader, and Gordon ranked just tied for 185th.

It's not even a contract that they were free to negotiate. They were sold to the league by the NFLPA as soon as they were drafted. If they prove they're good then that is the only leverage they will ever have, so why wait to use it?

Especially as a RB, with very limited earning potential after 6-7 years. Which is already half over by the time you've proven yourself good enough to create the tiniest bit of leverage. So lean into it while you can; the clock is ticking and every touch could be a last.

So their made up statistic is made up and retarded. Well, that was predictable.

Do you have any actual facts or even a thoughtful opinion to share?

What a terrible, logic-less, emotion-filled post. It's like talking football with a 19 year old girl.

PFFs rating and grades are all just based on opinion and shouldn't have any more stock put into them than espns qbr or Madden scores. They are not actual statistics.

Good point, it's much more likely that these guys don't actually watch football and, instead, make up ratings and grades based on credit score or Hilton Honors points of each of the players.
