Fresh off a year where he missed a quarter of the season and then averaged 2.1 yards per carry in the playoffs.

If I'm the Chargers, I tell him to go kick rocks.
That's the smart thing to do. Well, unless he hurts his foot

This is why you never give in to players demands. Let them keep sitting out. Eventually they will lose and every other player will see it. When you let players strong arm you, you just ensure that every future player will do the same. Team>Player.
Yeah, after it blew up in Le'Veon Bell's face, let guys keep sitting if they want to sit. This will cycle out.

He was an integral part of the Chargers success last season.

I agree the NFL doesn't need the headaches the NBA has experienced where the players control the league.

He averaged fewer than 19 touches per game when he did play. Cracked 100 yards rushing only three times, and missed a quarter of the season to injury, during which, the chargers were undefeated.

He is a nice player. But easily replaceable.

I wouldn't say worthless.

2016 - Pro Bowl - 1400 total yards 12 TD's
2017 - 1600 total yards 12 TD's
2018 - Pro Bowl - 1400 total yards 14 TD's

It depends on how much money he is looking for. If he is looking to be a top 5 paid RB...go take a hike. He isn't productive/healthy enough to be in that conversation.
3.8 YPC and a cloud of dust before last year.

63 YPG

8 career 100 yard games.

better pass catcher vs a runner IMO

Nice, useful player. Similar to guys like Tevin Coleman, James White or Darren Sproles.

But a guy who is in no position to be making contract demands.

I agree with the bolded but isn't that part of what makes him valuable? Isn't it only like 40% of plays that are runs for SD?

Last year counts too, right? And actually probably counts more. As for his career when you also have guys like Woodhead and Ekeler they probably got some of those carries that yielded a better YPA at least in part due to game situation. Maybe it's a chicken or the egg thing but weren't the Chargers in those years not great run blocking OLs?

Gurley's injury situation is the worst thing to happen to NFL RBs, especially those with injury concerns of their own. He should be grateful for maybe $7m per with a low guarantee.

Doesnt San Diego, I mean North San Diego have plenty of other capable RBs?

He is under contract. If he sits out fine him whatever you can legally fine him.
Then when he realizes hey I better report before this year dont count. Sit his ass on the bench.

End of season look at the other players & ask. Any questions?

Doubt this happens, but I really want it too.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for someone who plays for $3.4M then threatens to sit out for $5.6M. If you're prepared to sit for 10 games, (so you can be available for 6 games to count for the year of your contract), then sit in your, (cheaper), 4th year. Why wait until you're paid more money?

As for value he's gained 4372 yards, (rushing and receiving combined), over the last 3 years in 41 games. That isn't easy or cheap to replace. Dual threat RBs can add around 25% to their rushing yardage as receivers. RBs lose their receiving threat as they age and they become 1 dimensional. RBs whose receiving yardage adds 10% or less of their rushing yards are normally the RBs that are easy to replace. Obviously there are exceptions like Adrian Peterson. Gordon isn't a top RB option but i'd guess his value at $7.7M now escalating 500K per year to $32.8M over 4 years with the 1st year and a half guaranteed.

I doubt he gets anything more than he's currently due from the Chargers. Their owner would rather make a few more dollars than win football games.

Chargers probably won’t fold. They know you can accumulate star RBs easy after having LaDanian Tomlinson, Michael Turner and Darren Sproles all at the same time.
