With so many holes to fill not considering taking the best offers for the few tradable pieces we have is wrong. It is nothing but pipedreams to believe that we can compete against the Ray's, Red Soxes, Indians, A's etc for simply a WC place.

Oh I think we can compete against Rays Tribe As and Sox. Just don’t think we are in same caliber as Houston or NYY. No problem trading assets but good controllable SP are not found easily. Getting more of this is preferred not trading them away.

Getting better in increments seems the prudent course for now

Ouch. Tough year injury wise for our pitching prospects

When JD thinks we are contenders he will buy pitching. Getting there by the gradual approach is probably his game right now. Find a third starter who is controllable either by trade at the deadline or FA off season. Which probably means standing pat. I think we might see more Solak type minor league horse trading this season. But off season there are SP targets we can get.
How you going to get them to come here. The Rangers don't have a good track record of getting big time free agent pitchers to come to Arlington.

That is one of the things that makes it so tough on who a team can count on in regards to pitching prospects.

The heat was a part of the problem. I do think the new stadium will help.

I think the stadium definitely will help make us more competitive.

Years ago we lost out because FA pitchers wanted to go elsewhere whether it was heat related or other things. A lot of times over the past few years we simply didm't offer enough.

Yep. Money has always talked when offered enough.

The new stadium is a good start. Dumping some salary is another thing to consider.

One thing I have noticed with a number of the teams who are doing well including some new ones like the Braves is the youth movement that has had a positive affect on those teams has been position players and not so much the pitching. Look at the Braves, Yankees, Red Sox and Twins. Their pitching for the most part does not scare teams. The Dodgers have some good pitching but even with them it was this HR barrage that jump started them.

I know the heat definitely hurt us with cliff lee. It might’ve cost us a World Series. Imagine him starting those games against the cardinals instead of matt Harrison.

Sullivan is pretty much echoing what many of us have stated in this thread.

Seeing the realistic contention window and the perception of overachieving, would the Rangers be better off keeping Mike Minor and Lance Lynn and gradually building off them in the next couple of years or trading Minor for the long-term future?
-- Timothy S., Rowlett, Texas

Keep them both. This blather about trading Minor is ridiculous. OK, there might be some team out there so eager and desperate for starting pitching they would be willing to load two or three prime prospects in a deal so attractive, it’s irresistible. But the Rangers are moving into a new ballpark next season with a strong nucleus of offensive players begging to be surrounded by dependable starting pitching. A weary fan base wants to see the same thing.

Trade Minor and/or Lynn and the Rangers will be spending another winter trying to piece together a starting rotation. The smarter option is to keep them, see how Adrian Sampson, Ariel Jurado and Joe Palumbo develop, check out what is available this winter and, yes, build around Lynn and Minor.
