Wow, that's quite the trade there for the Leafs. I knew they had to address their defense but didn't know if they'd do anything that big and a deal they clearly won.

By my count, if the Leafs do indeed keep Ceci at $4.5m, Marner signs for around what Aho got on his OS ($8.5m) and Kerfoot comes in around $3m, that leaves the Leafs another $1.5 mil to grab a depth guy or two.

Rebuilding half your defence and pretty much the entire bottom six in two days is some great work. Well done Dubas.

Agree but no way Marner “settles” for 8.5. He will take up the rest of the cap space

I'm very pleased.

It also shows that Kadri had some pretty damn good value to grab a 3C and a 1D with retained salary out of him.

Yeah that amazes me he could pull that.
So that means the unsigned Derick Brassard is thinking he has value.

If he gets above $9m now i'll be surprised.

Dubas has all the leverage now thanks to Bergevin's offer sheet. There's nothing else out there for Mitch and this situation has to be resolved before game 1 - the Leafs don't have the cap space to wait it out until December like they did with Nylander. He's going to take whatever Dubas graciously offers him now, Dubas is going to trade him or he's going to sit.

My only question really is why did Dubas bother caving with Matthews so quickly.

Barrie's only a good return if the Leafs can retain him

Or if they win the Cup.
Ok what I don't understand are folks that hate this deal for the leafs? Stating they gave up a ton of toughness, my question is when did anyone think of Nazem Kadri as tough?

What Puck said.

Also keep in mind that most fans who get vocal on the internet about their teams are idiots.

Kadri is great in his own end and while I haven't watched much of Kerfoot it would be difficult for him to be as good at that two years into his career as Naz is, so the Leafs are definitely losing something there at least at first glance. I think what these people aren't understanding is that it's not 2014 anymore and the Leafs have John god damn Tavares and Auston god damn Matthews up the middle ahead of the 3C who are both fantastic in their own ends, making a downgrade of that sort somewhat more palatable.

They're also forgetting that Trevor Moore is probably going to start the season as a 3LW and he's the kind of guy who does this:

So, yeah, I think they'll be alright.

Mackenzie says there was indeed a Kadri-for-Brodie trade (with other stuff) on the table but Kadri didn't want to waive his NTC to go to Calgary. Didn't have Colorado on his NTC.

I take that as he didn't like the return coming to Toronto and wanted better so made Dubas get back to work on a better deal. True Leaf.

Game 7, 2020 Stanley Cup, Colorado and Toronto, Kadri scores an own goal and proceeds to remove his jersey to reveal a Leafs jersey underneath while laughing maniacally, Jim Ross yelling "No! Not like this!"
