I just don't get how anyone who has been following this team didn't expect the team to do exactly what they did last night.

Their entire philosophy has ALWAYS been quantity over quality. PC/JS will ALWAYS take 2 mid 2nds instead of 1 mid 1st. They understand this is a numbers game and that no matter how good you are at drafting, you are going to miss a lot of the time.

Successful teams at the draft are the teams that always have lots of draft picks.

Maybe Sweat will turn into a Hall of Famer. And maybe he is out of football in 4 years. None of us know which one it will be.

Really surprising to see the negative Nancies in here.....NOT.

"We passed on this guy who is better than this other guy..." -- truth is we don't know as much about these players as the teams do. NFL teams, for some insane reason, don't go out and hire fans to be GMs. They don't even go out and hire the Mel Kipers or Todd McShays of the world to be GMs. Well, I may retract that a tad...the Raiders hired Mike Mayock, and I guess we'll see how that works out (I wonder what the armchair GMs think of their draft so far??). But who would you rather have running our draft -- Mayock or John Schneider?? It's a largely rhetorical question, isn't it?

"We don't have enough star players now like we did in 2013..." -- well, most of those star players weren't star players right out of the box. Kam started as a backup who had some trouble in space early in his career, and certainly nobody expected him to become the dominant force that he was. Nobody expected Sherm to be a HOF level CB. And you're not telling me you knew Bobby Wagner was destined for perennial All Pro status as a 2nd round rookie from Utah St; did you even know who KJ Wright was when we drafted him? Jarran Reed could be a star in the making. Will Dissly certainly played like one in the few games we saw of him as a rookie. Tyler Lockett has developed into one of the more lethal deep threats. Chris Carson emerged as a workhorse for the league's top ground game. All sorts of other young players like Rasheem Green, Jacob Martin, Tre Flowers, David Moore, Griffins, etc. with unknown career arcs. But yeah, let's just write them all off, wring our hands, and declare failure before we even know what we have in them. Sheesh.

I know next to nothing about LJ Collier, but I have confidence that Pete & John do and that they still understand better than anyone who fits their system talent-wise and who has the right make-up to be a Seahawk. When this week started, we were faced with having a potential hold-out franchise tag DE costing us $17M of cap space and going into the draft with just 4 picks. As we woke up this morning, we have a newly added DE prospect from a major football program, $17M more in cap space, twice as many picks remaining as what we started with, and an additional 2nd round pick next year. If that has you discouraged about what this team is doing because we could have had so-and-so but instead drafted Collier, then I think your perspective is awfully questionable.

Looking forward to seeing what we do with these 8 picks over the next couple days and learning about all the new Hawks.

All great points. Appreciate someone writing it up. I think we could've had Collier later, so I can't give it a SUPER high grade (graded it a C) but he will immediately help the rush defense and hopefully can replace Michael Bennett to some degree. While I get it was time to move on from Bennett, his presence last year was sorely missed as we were the THIRD WORST rush D in yards per carry. That's right folks, 4.9 YPC AVERAGE allowed, and no surprise the Cowboys picked up on that and absolutely annihilated us with Elliott in the playoffs.

Clark was good, against the pass. I don't know where everyone is getting he is some AMAZING rush defender... he's above average in that department, but his job was to go after the QB. We have a # of other players on the roster that may be able to step up into that role. It also baffles me how many analysts/broadcasters/fans/etc. forgot about Rasheem Green. "He didn't do anything his rookie year." He wasn't supposed to. He was 20 when he was drafted and everyone with a brain knew he needed to bulk up and develop his skills - which hopefully he's done with a full season and another offseason to come.

And really? 5 picks? And you wanted to blow 2 of those and end with 3? Really? That's not how teams build successful organizations. You stockpile as many as you can since around 70-75% of 1st rounders bust (meaning they never get elected to a pro bowl once).

We hit on late round picks, 7 years ago. We haven't hit on much since then. Its been a lot of misses.

We could have had a legit upgrade at DE and RT with potential to be LT when brown is done. Big wiff.

Probabilities of the NFL Draft - National Football Post
  • There is practically no difference among first round selections in a player lasting five years in the league
    • The probability declines rapidly beginning late in the third round
  • The principal difference between the first and second Draft Ranges is the probability of drafting a Pro Bowl or All Pro player
  • The chances of drafting a five-year starter decline rapidly after the first 24 selections
    • Chances are better than 50-50 in the first 24 picks
  • The chances of drafting a player who wins post-season honors is remote after the first 73 selections
    • The drop-off is even more drastic when it comes to multiple All-Pro selections

Michael Dickson, Tre Flowers,Ted Thompson, David Moore, Alex Collins, Cassius Marsh, Luke Willson, Spencer Ware.

All drafted in the 4th round or later over the past 5 years.

We haven't hit on any Hall of Famers in the later rounds in 7 years.

I would also add Chris Carson, Quinton Jefferson, and maybe even Glowinski. All NFL starters or borderline starters, which is beyond expectation of a 4th+ rounder.

Rbs are easy to draft late, the rest are either depth or unproven

We cant continually pass on high end players for depth, the law of dimminishing returns is real

So you would rather that we kept those 2 late 1sts and not got the extra 4 4th round picks?
