I don’t understand this contract, though. He signed a minor league deal worth 2M plus incentives?

Is that even allowed? Does that count towards lux tax (not sure it matters for the Rangers, but I am curious about the “legalities” of the signing).

I'm assuming it's he gets paid $2m plus incentives if he's on the ML roster.

Last year the Giants sign Holland to a minor league deal, but was paid $1.5 is base salary, and earned and extra $250k in incentives.

Is this a bigger signing than Rupp?

My general thought is that they would like to keep Hundley around, but they aren’t going to pay a lot for him. They have probably told him that they could be his safety net job as he looks for a better situation.

Marginally, maybe. He's got more big league experience than Rupp. Bat probably isn't as good though and is much older. Not sure how defense compares between the two.

I like Rivera much more than Rupp.

Rupp is basically a shit defender (although so was Hundley and he ended up being OK). Rivera is elite.

I would guess that Rivera is 3rd in line behind Posey and Garcia, then Rupp.

Thanks for the defensive reports. I would almost guess that Rivera breaks camp with the team over Garcia if Posey is healthy enough to start the season with the team.

  • The Giants outrighted right-hander Derek Law and outfielder John Andreoli to Triple-A after both players cleared waivers, as per a team announcement (hat tip to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic). Law and Andreoli were both recently designated for assignment; in fact, Law was DFA’ed to clear roster space for Andreoli’s signing on February 1. The two will remain in San Francisco’s farm system as depth options, though Andreoli might have a clearer path to winning a big league job given the Giants’ lack of everyday outfielders.
(Eye roll on that last sentence)

The A's just signed Hundley to a minor league deal. Apparently, the Giants weren't even his fall back option. They just moved on from him. I hope this signals the end to the Giants' foray into the free agent pool for catchers. The other guys that are left are no better than Hundley.

This tidbit from MLB Rumors would explain the shift from Hundley to Rivera:
Defensively speaking, Hundley is more of a mixed bag. His framing work last year graded out near the bottom of the league, but he was roughly average a year prior. Similarly, Hundley’s caught-stealing rate dipped to a below-average 21 percent in 2018, but he was a bit above the league mean at 29 percent in 2017. He’s generally drawn average or better marks in terms of blocking pitches in the dirt.

The Vogt signing is starting to make even less sense:

Is he even ready to play yet?
Depth.

Posey is a bit of a question mark health-wise; Garcia is a rookie; Rivera is a defensive specialist and Rupp is a shuttle mainstay.

But this guy hasn't even thrown yet and his surgery was last May. If the main catcher is questionable (and I'm not sure he's that questionable, from the comments made about his ability to start the season. It sounds like the Giants are more cautious about how much he plays at the beginning of the season, not if he plays at the beginning) then why sign a guy who's questionable himself for depth?

Boogie Cousins?

He was signed to a minor league deal and has a good track record. If he recovers, he is the clear best option. If he doesn’t, who cares?

I'm not attacking you LHG and I mean this with great admiration, but what is it with you and the Giants signing MiLB guys lol? Each team can carry as many as 150+ guys in their organization, maybe more. Giants need depth everywhere. And with these MiLB contracts, if the guys sucks there's no penalty to get rid of them... and that's if they don't opt-out by July first.

Thanks for the kind words but I don't feel like you are attacking me. I've got no problems with questions, especially since I do tend to harp on this.
I didn't know the exact amount of players the organization can carry, but knew it was somewhere in the ballpark number you mentioned. The thing is, by my count (I'm so nerdy, I track minor league transactions and keep a list of the guys still in the farm), there is approximately 215 guys under contract (about 14 of them are on the 40 man roster, I took the 40 and subtracted 26, considering Cueto will most assuredly be on the injured list at the beginning of the season). More specifically, the Giants, historically, have hoarded guys who were over the hill and/or broken down, and continued to play them to the detriment of guys they've been bringing up and who, I felt, deserved the playing time and/or promotion, more. In this case, the Giants have brought back Ronnie Freeman, and brought in Cameron Rupp, Rene Rivera and Stephen Vogt when they already have Aramis Garcia and, most likely, a healthy Buster Posey. I had no problems with two of Rupp, Rivera and Vogt but the Vogt signing seemed too much.
Know I understand that there's a new regime so I guess old habits (on my part) die hard. But I'm still a bit skeptical on whether they let loose a couple of those guys because of a poor spring. I really like to see Matt Winn in AA and Hamlet Marte is an intriguing 6 year signing that I think deserves to play in AA too. Jin-De Jang also would be pushing for AA playing time as well. With Joey Bart landing in San Jose, these guys are getting squeezed. I don't want to see Freeman and/or Rupp land there. I'd rather they be in AAA or out of the org (either backing up Garcia, or Garcia backing up Posey).

Sorry, not big on basketball, so I only know that he's a basketball players. Don't really know the story.
I would disagree with you on Vogt being the best option. His offensive numbers weren't that good the last two years he was healthy. They were only marginally better than Hundley's, and considering the two are both 34 years old, and Hundley didn't miss a year due to injury, I think Vogt is a step down.

Now compare Vogt with Rivera. Rivera is only a year older and, from what I can gather, is head and shoulders better defensively than Vogt (I read somewhere that Vogt and Hundley grade out similarly defensively). And Rivera's offensive numbers the past two seasons, albeit in fewer at-bats, were actually better than Vogt's. Considering the health concern on Vogt, and the fact that Rivera was just signed himself, it still seems that a needless pickup. And I like Vogt, in the fact that he's from my neck of the woods. I am rooting for him. If he's healthy, and looks good in camp, and the Giants cannot start Posey, I'm okay with him winning out over Rivera to platoon with Garcia. Otherwise, I hope someone else likes what they see in him and pick him up from the Giants.

Giants claimed Jose Lopez off waivers from the Reds and designated Josh Osich for assignment. I'm surprised Osich lasted this long. Lopez looks like he could be a good pick up.
