It was so disappointing to not see Mahomes get a chance to match Brady with a TD of his own.

IMO no matter what the team does in the opening possession, the other team should be get the ball back to try and match it.

After that then you can go to sudden death.

I'm perfectly fine if they would only use this formula in the playoffs.
I was for this long before the current rules were implemented.

That's what's wrong with the game.. ..Not the counsel toss......
I agree and review should be updated especially on PI but imagine baseball you win the toss bat first score and game over. That logic is fucked. It's a team game let both sides offence and defence get a shot to win the game.

The first team to possess the ball in OT will only use 3 downs to drive the field as they'd have to punt on 4th & long. The team already trailing would use 4 downs the entire way down the field with nothing to lose.

That's why the current rule is as close to proper as can be.

I'd be ok with Mahomes getting the ball back if KC was only allowed three downs.
Good point but the first team could go for it as well so I'd let that ride.

Fuck that if your defense sucks go home and sit on your couch. Get a fucking stop this isn’t Texas Tech and Oklahoma

Agree. A friend of mine that I was watching the games with last night and I were talking about this.

If both teams are going to get a chance to possess the ball in OT, then both teams should get a chance regardless of what the first score is.

I would leave the game being over on a defensive score. But other than something like that, both teams should have a chance whether the team that scores first scores via field goal or touchdown.

Otherwise, just go back to the old "sudden death" rules.

If the Saints had scored a TD in OT, you'd be celebrating and the OT rule would be just fine. The Saints did the unthinkable, Brees had an INT in OT and the Saints could not stop the Rams from getting into FG range. Everyone hates the OT rule today because their team didn't win. Worse, the Patriots did.
Not true I had no bone to pick I just think that in the playoffs every player should be involved offence and defence. It's only fair to the players if you played sports you would want a shot not just one team and it would be entertaining as hell.

I agree with OP...the Rule SHOULD be changed....back to the way it originally was. Sudden Death. Sack up, or go home.

I'll sign on 100% with that if we also go back to real football and allow hits again. Who doesn't miss watching WR's getting crunched on crossing routes?

Take my lumps? I'm not a Chiefs fan lol.

Saints had the ball first in OT today.

Losing a game due to a coin toss is just so trash to me.

The least you can do is allow the opposing offense to get the ball if a team starts OT with a TD on their first possession.

It's not losing a game to a coin flip. It's losing a game to inadequate defense, which happens all the time.

How would you feel from the opposite perspective? You got the ball first, drove for what would be a game-winning TD in any other year in the league, and suddenly that's not enough?

Great point ,at this stage including preseason, these teams have played 22, 23 games and don't have a 90 man roster like in college and not 19 yr old kids

Preseason is largely played by guys who are cut before the season starts, no need to include that (other than maybe as 1 game).

I mean I always had this stance on OT. I just think both offense deserves a shot with the ball and since everyone been making this about defense, would be nice to see both defense get a shot at proving they can stop the opposing offense.

Don't get me wrong, I still think the Pats probably win last night even under my rules.

It’s a new NFL, with high-scoring college-inspired offenses, and rule changes emphasizing the offenses, it’s illogical to keep this OT status quo in 2019, especially in the playoffs. I think over the next few years we’ll see the coinflip winner have an even high OT win%.

3-10-NE 35 (13:40) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass short middle to J.Edelman to KC 45 for 20 yards (D.Sorensen).
3-10-KC 45 (12:51) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass short middle to J.Edelman to KC 30 for 15 yards (C.Ward).
3-10-KC 30 (11:57) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass short left to R.Gronkowski to KC 15 for 15 yards (E.Berry).

The Chiefs had 3 Excellent chances of forcing the Pats to punt, or settling for FG. They failed.

Is this bowling or golf? Should we give the Chiefs a handicap because their defense sucks?

I'd have put more money on the Pats stopping Mahomes from getting a TD in OT than I would have on him generating a TD.

Like in the SB versus Atlanta.

Just make OT essentially a 5th period.

It puts less emphasis on who actually gets the ball first.

It’s not fucking rocket science.

I don't know if you've noticed dunce but teams like the Rams, Chiefs, and Saints are playing Big 12 football. Offense is the future.
Big12 football is definitely not the future. Not even for the Big12.
