Yeah I always wondered why Wake let the dude from Air Force hang around more than two years.

Wake's AD extended Dino Gaudio's contract the year before he fired him. lmao, the only thing Dino did after his contract got extended was win 20 games, go to the Round of 32 in the NCAAT and sign ESPN's #6 ranked recruiting class.

note: I don't think Dino was a good coach, but his record was pretty good so you needed to let him fail before you actually fired him. Firing a coach that went 61-31 over three years is not a good look and other coaches will take note of it)

Bzdelik knew Wake's AD for a long time and that's how he got the job. He was the coach for four years because of loyalty from a long time friend or acquaintance and not wanting to pay two different coaches to not coach @ Wake Forest

is the worst coach in DI basketball

change my mind

I haven't checked out all of the bottom feeders among D1 basketball coaches but I'm not going to try to change your mind. I'll just say that when Wake Forest hired Manning I didn't think he would be the answer for a once proud Deacs basketball program.

I never understood why anyone thought he would be a good coach. Tulsa was pissed but I didn't get it. Larry Brown coached him up one season and he hasn't done shit since.

Maybe Wake Forest bought Larry Brown's recommendation of Manning but that doesn't sound likely since Brown played for UNC.

@Scapegoat @tomcat1

As an assistant coach @ Kansas, Manning had an excellent reputation as a developer of big men. Thomas Robinson, Morris Twins, Jeff Withey, Sasha Kaun all credit their development as a post player to Manning.

Manning didn't really recruit at KU, so that was my initial concern of Manning. Silly looking back on it, because Manning hasn't been a solid recruiter for Wake. He's landed more 5*/4* guys than 3* guys. Manning's problem is that outside of developing big men and landing solid talent, he can't do anything else. He's a bad floor coach, he's been mediocre at keeping guys in the program (and i'm not talking about guys that leave early for the NBA) and he's been beyond awful at teaching defense at this level. His teams also comically fall apart at the end of games.

During the last coaching search, Wellman, Wake's AD, didn't hire a firm to help out the search. Wellman did everything himself. That is the problem. Wake's AD suffers from smartest guy in the room syndrome and that is the reason why Wake keeps hiring bad coaches.

Wellman had no problem hiring a firm for the last football coaching search. Wake ended up with Dave Clawson, and Clawson has been excellent at Wake. I couldn't be happier with him.

The problem is that Wake's AD is an egomaniac that thinks the basketball program is his baby. He's completely destroyed all the hard work that Dave Odom, Skip Prosser and even Dino Gaudio put into it.

the only name that is in the same universe as Bzdelik. However, Bzdelik is still worse than Lickliter by a decent amount. Lickliter took Butler to the Sweet 16 right before Iowa hired him. Good resume on paper, turned out to be a terrible fit @ Iowa. Bzdelik's resume was trash.

I'm saying that I don't know what they did because I was just guessing.

All I know is that I am an ACC fan and I don't think Manning was the right hire for Wake Forest.

I was just kidding by even mentioning Larry Brown.

Now if I had said Dave Odom recommended a coach to Wake Forest I would not have been kidding since he was my favorite Wake Forest coach of all time. Maybe that's because he recruited Tim Duncan who was one of my favorite ACC players of all time.

Odom lives in Winston-Salem again and it isn't rare for him to drop by Wake practices. Manning just hired Odom's old #1 assistant, Ernie Nestor, as a special assistant.

Krystkowiak of Utah is at a turning point himself. He took over a very over matched and depleted team and crushed it early. Delon Wright from JUCO, Poetl was an unknown overseas player, and pulled down 2 solid recruits in Kuzma and Brekkott Chapman. It led to a few NCAA tournaments and even a decent run 1 year.

Since that point he has had 9 people transfer, all the talent to back-fill the 3 NBA caliber players are now on other teams. The team is always well coached, but that many transfers is a bad look for him, and his early run on awesome recruiting has dried up.

I've been a Carolina fan since I was 12. So I've seen more ACC than most people in this area. Obviously an OU fan so I've seen a lot of Manning. He had one good season and he's lived off of that for the last 30 years. I thought it was a bad hire from the beginning.

Yeah, I just don't see how you can build a successful CBB program with that many transfers. It's pretty hard. You're always going to have guys transfer for lack of PT, but having 9 transfers over a short period of time can be death for a head coach.

1 transfer was "So I can be closer to my girlfriend" Which is awesome. The rest are all about playing time. Brekkott Chapman transferred because Kuzma out worked him and took all the minutes. Chapman was the much higher recruit.
