I think they just have to ride it out and not make a panic move. I honestly don't even like typing that with that ghastly performance last night. But GM's don't throw life vests, they throw anchors.

If the Flyers can get back to even last years levels of goal suppression (16th in goals against, 24th in sv%), they'll be in a decent spot looking at the playoffs. They were last year, and this team is better than last years team on paper.
The season wont be lost because we are looking at basically the same team we had last year. We can win 10 in a row and we can lose 10 in a row. Hexy addressed exactly zero problems we had last season so we will basically be pretty much the same as last year, right on the bubble playoff teams maybe sneak in and get knocked out in the first round

Some stats that stood out:

Gee- minus 2 and 3 giveaways
Flyers team hits only 11.
Pickard 28 shots 6 goals
Simmonds minus 4

The issue is primarily team defense, communication and positioning. There is simply a lack of compete or focus at times in our own zone, whether it be a forward, a defenseman, the goalie or all of the above. For example, I remember seeing Hagg and MacDonald both on one side of the ice, near the boards and the front of the net left completely vacated on one of these recent goals against. That kind of shit is maddening to see at this level of hockey and should never, ever happen.

It at times probably amounts to guys trying to do more than just their own job.

Obviously turnovers in other areas of the ice and high risk plays that didn't pay off are also exacerbating these overall concerns.

It also doesn't help matters that several of our key players are either lacking confidence, slumping and/or injured. Some guys are all of these things...Lol

Yes, it's still early, but we're on pace to give up 363 goals this season. The most given up last season by any team was 296 by the Islanders...Lol

If I'm not mistaken, this is the 7th season in a row that we have stumbled out of the gate as a team. I guess that is what is most concerning.

Why start off so fucking slow all of the time? These games count just as much as any of the others.

This would be a non-issue if we were a perennial playoff team, but we're not these days.

And furthermore, we're going to get wrecked tomorrow afternoon on home ice by the hated fucking Devils if we don't bring another level of play. They lead the league in goal differential and have given up only 9 goals through 5 games. We have given up 31 goals in 7 games. This comparison is pretty ridiculous.

So scratching Rinne off the list because i'm dumb..

Saros is basically the perfect backup for the Preds. 1.5M and actually good. It would take a lot, and probably at the deadline, to try to pry him away.

2.42GAA, .923 sv% in 48 regular season games
1.76GAA, .915 sv% in 6 playoff games

Would you trade Simmonds and Elliot, for Saros? The Preds are going to want something to help them win the cup this year. (Given Simmonds' contract status, he seems like the most reasonable to give up to me)

And who replaces Simmer?

How about Alex Lyon.
I thought he played pretty well last year

Well, he is fresh of IR, right? So, it's a possibility, but they probably want him in game shape first and yet they also want Hart to start a lot in the Ahl. Then you have Stolarz, who is not waivers exempt. Goalies all over the place, but they are young, injured or could be lost altogether to another team.

Also, if you hold three goalies at the Nhl level, that's one less forward or defenseman to carry on the roster. A lot goes into this, obviously.

You could put Patrick Roy in there right now and still get beat the way we are playing. Team defense and our defense men are terrible right now. We never addressed the issues we had last season so even with Lyon,Elliot,Neuvy,Pickard or Stolarz playing we are still a fringe playoff team.

Nolan Patrick could go a long way in helping us with the team defense as he is a two way forward. i think he will be back next game. He is pretty fragile for one of our bigger players.

Blue Jackets 6, Flyers 3: Where's the defense and goaltending?

Ivan Provorov's struggles continued in the opening period. The Flyers' defenseman had a bad turnover to Anthony Duclair, he got turned around during another shift and Provorov's failure to corral the puck led to an eventual tripping call against Sonny Milano. General manager Ron Hextall said Provorov's not injured but he's not playing up to his standards.

Good thing Ron doesn't miss the obvious!

If we miss the playoffs this season i would think he is on the hot seat as well as Haks.

I thought the whole team played better defense when Lyon played last year. He was assigned to the Phantoms on October 10 but it doesn't look like he has played yet. The Phantoms play the next 3 days and have 6 games in 9 days, so I would think he plays at some point.

Gotta give to get if you want a starting NHL goalie. Alex Lyon has 11 games played in the NHL and mediocre numbers (.905/2.75). I'd be willing to try him, but he's not the 'without a doubt fix' that you asked for.

Not even saying I would trade Simmonds, but you're not going to get a 'without a doubt fix' in net for guys you don't like and a 2nd round pick. Going to have to give up something of value.

Let's be honest here, the only negative we should really be surprised at is the poor play of Provorov. Nothing else should be coming as a shock. Elliot is just coming off of a significant injury and was forced into being the clear #1 too soon due to the injury to Neuvirth. Lyon also got hurt and Stolarz is also coming off of a major injury. It's no surprise that the goaltending is struggling. Up front, Couturier is still not yet 100% and Patrick and JVR are out. Fortunately, it looks like Simmonds is back to close to 100% sooner than I expected coming off of significant injuries and Ghost has been strong. The 4th line has been solid, as has Gudas. Sanheim and Hagg have had their ups and downs as expected for young dmen still finding their way. Folin more downs than ups and is still learning the system. MacDonald was even worse than expected coming back too soon from injury.

Hard to gel with all of that going on. I do agree though that Hakstol needs to be on the hot seat this year. If we're not seeing significant improvement by games 20-25 or so, it might be time to pull the trigger on him.
