POLL Altuve HR or Fan-interference?

Should that have been called a HR or an out? And would the Astros have won if it was a HR?

  • It was a HR and Astros would've won if it was called so.

  • It was a HR, but Astros still would've lost.

  • It was fan interference and should've been called an out.

It looked to me from the backside view like Mookie was touched before his glove went over the wall, so I lean toward the call being right, but I would agree it's not a perfectly conclusive angle, either. The guy in the collared shirt is clearly over the fence, the older guy in the red shirt is clearly making sure he's behind the fence with his reach...so where the blue and orange shirt guys that are between them that actually contacted Betts is the question. And it looked to me like blue shirt guy definitely contacted him before his glove was over the fence.

No doubt orange shirt guy made Mookies glove close and affected his ability to catch the ball. But I thought once the player went into the stands it was a moot point as to interference? Guess I was wrong.....:noidea:

If it's in the stands it's fair game so it should have been a HR. I have no idea if they would have won. You never can count the Sox out.

And no way of knowing what the outcome would've been if it had been called a HR. Would the Astros have scored more runs in the 1st? Would the Red Sox have won it in extra innings? Impossible to say.

If it had been called a HR on the field, it would've stood as a HR after review, too.

The ump called it interference so the replay would have to definitively prove it was in the stands and apparently they couldn't. It's a credit to Mookie that's he's such a great athlete to even make it a question.

I agree about Mookie. But how in the world could they NOT see it was in the stands? I could give two shits either way cuz I have no skin in the game, but sheeesh.

I thought it was in the stands too, I have no idea how they came to their conclusion. I was paying more attention to a hockey game and was watching the ballgame on the laptop with the sound off so if they gave any explanations I didn't hear them

Nope you're right . They could've ripped the glove off his hand and hit him with it once it's in the stands lol

This is pretty clearly in the field of play to me. Button-downed Dad-Bod on the far right is holding the fence, leaning over slightly, reaching over slightly even more, and his hand is only two inches up the elbow of the orange-clad guy who is reaching out even farther to interfere:

Fans are allowed to protect themselves . A ball coming into the stands is always going to be grabbed at because you're not just going to sit there and let it hit you in the face just so a guy reaching into the stands can try to make a play

Olney had a good point (for a change). Was the fan ejected for interfering for a ball in play? If not, then it was a HR.
I once had really nice box seats at the old Rangers ballpark and saw some clueless cow reach over the short wall to pick up a ball that the home team had been throwing all over the infield...the look Steve Beuchele gave her was priceless. All she had done up to that point was talk a mile a minute with her friends and she had no idea what was happening in the game....she jumped up and down and waved the ball for a few seconds until she realized whole park was booing her.

Security came to toss her and she cried while begging them to let her stay....it was so obvious that she was a ditz who didn't understand that she had interfered with the game that they let her be.

The great photo that was just posted makes it clear to me that Betts' glove was tipped while the ball was in play, so no HR!!!!

Went to the old ballpark there many a night. Used to sit in the bleachers and eat nachos and drank beer and talk shit to the outfielders. In that stadium, as you know, in the outfield you were right on top of them. Had a White Sox pitcher so fuckin wound up one night he acted like he was gonna come up in the stands and curbstomp my ass....lol.......

The umpire made the correct call, no doubt about it. And as a side note, Mookie Betts is the best baseball player in MLB, period.

What is the baseball rule for interference once the ball is in the stands?

No interference shall be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence, railing, rope or into a stand to catch a ball. He does so at his own risk. However, should a spectator reach out on the playing field side of such fence, railing or rope, and plainly prevent the fielder from catching the ball, then the batsman should be called out for the spectator’s interference.

That's a lot of help, huh? LOL
