His tag would be much less.......
Remember it's based off of what he's getting now.....And right now he hasn't made shit.
If he plays 8 games, what he is paid for those 8 games would be what it's based on.
Only when using the Transition Tag. And that one doesn't guarantee you compensation.

If they Franchise Tag him again, for a 3rd time, it's based on top 5 salaries in the league (not just his position anymore), which would be the $22+ million figure.

But again, They have lots of cap space coming into next season, with millions in credits due to Bell's holdout that will roll over.

The Steelers can afford a pre-season tag.

I think we're seeing right now that PIT has bigger fish to fry than a RB...I'm willing to take the production I get from Connor this year and next year add a Tevin Coleman next yr....then use the rest of the cap space on a CB or another edge rusher.

This season is heading towards a top 10 pick. If so, they have to get a plug and play player. Supposedly a lot of edge players coming in this class.

Obviously that would be the Steelers angle...and Bell's camp/NFLPA would argue it should be based off the tag's value.

IDK who would win that court battle, but I wouldn't be that interested in trying to retain Bell any longer...pretty clear what they need.

Ooh I'd have no intention of paying Bell a nickel of that. Just something to hold his rights until you can trade him.

Bell won't sign it either. So no worries. Can always rescind it if they don't think they will get value. But I think someone will, and the FT is how you accomplish it.

A tag next preseason leaves him able to sign a LT contract with a new team. Makes him more valuable in a trade than he is right now.

So is this guy not playing at all this year? My Fantasy team is really hurting because he wants a few more extra million in his back pocket.

At the end of the day, do you think you'll get more than a 3rd rounder?...I don't know if they would.

Yeah. I think they can get more than a 3rd rounder if they hold off until the offseason to do it.

And, that 3rd rounder would get deferred for another year. So it doesn't help the Steelers 'now'. I'd rather get that pick right away for the 2019 than wait until the 2020 draft.

We don't know.

Maybe if he comes back after the bye?

But maybe the Steelers don't want to play him. And maybe he plays safe to prevent him from Thomas-ing himself.

You made a poor selection, IMO.

I heard rumors he was thinking of coming back after the BYE. Also heard a team may be trying to trade for him, Chargers?

We've heard it said he's coming back after the bye.

And we've heard the trade rumors.

You're guess is as good as ours. but at any rate, even if he is traded, he can't sign a contract until after this season is over. He's stuck on the tag. No matter where he is playing, he's not going balls out. He's going to protect his health. Job 1.

You'd have to spell it out for me because I'm not sure they could get more than 3rd rounder....obviously '19 is more enticing to PIT so that alone is an improvement over the comp pick option.

The part still fuzzy to me with any Bell trade this season or tagging again and trying this again next offseason is Bell's entire world is flipped upside down. The trading team this offseason wouldn't be able to give him a long term deal until '20...right? The trading team might not be getting a motivated player again.

That said, I suppose if I could get more than a 3rd or even a '19 3rd, it's worth trying, but clearly I'd be looking to invest Bell's money on DEF.

Report: Eagles Have Been Mulling Trading For Bell 'For A While' - Steelers Depot

But this is the type team I can see pursuing Bell this season...playoff caliber team looking to add that one piece to get over the hump. Bell is a competitor, if his plans are to come back week 7 or whatever, he has to know it's possible he could be put into a game so he'll be ready to play... one would think anyway.

Unless we would get a player right now we really get no benefit out of dealing bell this season.

If we trade him to someone right now at reduced value due to him being a short term rental, or tagging him as soon as THIS season ends and trading him to someone who can sign him right away.... The pick acquired would be able to be used in the same draft year.

Cut him now, and we get nothing. The way the comp picks work is foremost 1 to 1. You lose two guys, and bring in two guys, they cancel out.
The Basics and Methodology of Projecting the NFL's Compensatory Draft Picks | Over the Cap

That's how it would work with Bell if we dropped him this season. We lost two (including him), we signed two. They cancel out. We might get a 5th through a 7th if he signs a monster deal (because of total value), but a 3rd wouldn't happen. Steelers would be ineligible due to the 1 to 1 formula.

And if they Steelers let him walk AFTER this season, they might be able to earn a comp pick out of him that way. But that wouldn't be calculated in this coming years draft, but the NEXT one. And with all the cap space the Steelers will have, we might again be canceling him out.

IMO the best case scenario would have been a player trade like Earl Thomas. But after something like that.... We should hold him and tag him again next year so we can trade him to a team that can sign him long-term right away. We could get the best possible pick that way. Maybe a 2nd rounder or better.

Did you tell him? I'm sure if you explain to him the importance of your fantasy football team, he'll see his ways and report immediately. You can find him on Twitter and Instagram. LOL.

Steelers' Randy Fichtner strives to get James Conner more carries

"It’s just like quarterbacks, too," Fichtner continued. "You get into a rhythm. And all good running backs, they need that rhythm." Conner has been a relative disappointment Weeks 2-4 following his huge opener. Over the last three games, Conner has rushed 24 total times for 97 yards and one touchdown, adding 13 catches. The catch numbers are nice, but that's not a Le'Veon Bell-type workload on the ground after Conner went 31-135-2 as a runner in Week 1. This week presents a huge get-right spot for Conner and the Steelers offense against a depleted Falcons team with the highest game total of 2018 at 58 points.

First game: Conner rushed 31 times for 135. That's 4.35 per
Next 3 games: Conner rushed 24 TOTAL times for 97 yards. That's 4.04 per.

Fuck. I don't see Conner as being disappointing. I see Fichtner being disappointing not giving that dude more carries.

Conner is fine. He just isn't getting touches, despite being just as productive.

I tried to tell this to someone last week and they were having none of it. This proves I was right.

And I think we've all been griping about this. Zero balance on offense. Even when they were behind they were able to pull within winning so there's no reason to only give Conner 3-4 carries per half. That's ridiculous. But I also think the O-line needs to play better.

Fichtner is quite the reactionary OC. It's not until he falls flat on his face does he say he needs to do something different. I guess we can attribute that to his lack of OC coaching for the past decade-plus. He hasn't called plays since 2006. Didn't think we'd have this many growing pains though with him being the QB coach for so long. Pretty ridiculous no matter how you look at it.
