49ers signed QB Jimmy Garoppolo to a five-year, $137.5 million contract.

In terms of average-annual value — $27.5 million — it makes Garoppolo the highest-paid player in NFL history. That's at least until Kirk Cousins hits free agency. Going on 27, Garoppolo has made only seven career starts, but he has won all of them. He was a wonder in his six 2017 49ers appearances, completing 67.4 percent of his 178 passes while averaging 8.8 yards per attempt. This, with Marquise Goodwin as his No. 1 receiver. Garoppolo's signature is his lighting-quick release. It allows him to attempt throws other quarterbacks would not dream of. The money is eye-popping for someone with so little regular season experience, but Garoppolo should validate the 49ers' trust in 2018.

some of you on here thought that i was nuts that KC will get 30m per season. With this new contract KC might make over 30M per season. I don't know what the gmoney is but I bet its higher than Staffords.

well we have CDC now so its OK

the point DEAN is the market dictated it and if we didnt low ball 9000 times it would have been handled

if a guy with like 7 career starts breaks the bank with a record deal with less of a resume then KC , then KC wasnt asking too much at all and the market value argument is a clear lost debating point to the puppets since they failed to accept the facts

never debated market value. I and others don't believe he is worth the money.

Water under the bridge in regards to Cousins - he will be playing elsewhere soon - hope he gets whatever he wants.

All this proves is, the longer you dick around, the more a QB is going to cost you. Cousins will get more than Grap, and the next guy will get more than Cousins. We saved a few MIllion, we get to start over.

more than a few million. We still have to wait to compare Smith and KC's gmoney. I didn't doubt KC was going to get paid. You guys did. When someone disagreed with that you guys pounced. KC is going to use this contract to fleece the Browns. At this point the Browns don't care and will pay anything,

I never doubted Cousins was going to get paid. I doubt that we have saved the tons of cap space I was told we would.

Way I figure it, this coming season Smith will cost us $20M against the cap, Cousins on his new deal I expect to come in at around $25M against the cap.

So real usable money for this year, I figure we saved $5M against the cap.. and it only cost us a 3rd rounder and a player.

Grap just got 90mg for the first 3 years. Kc is going to get 100mg for the first three years. The savings is more like 10--12m. Plus we get a good QB in Smith for a 3rd rounder and a player.

Dean.. I will remind you again, you know fuck all of how the cap actually works.

So what if Grap got $90M guaranteed over the first three years.

What if thats a $50M signing bonus on a 6 year deal, with a base salary in year one of $1M and roster bonuses in years 2-4??

Guarantee his base salary in years 2-3 and I can make that $90 work rather easily.

You may be on to something about the Browns, as there are ONLY two teams with that kind of cap room right now, to sign him(Kirk) for more than what Grap is getting. Those two teams are the Browns and Jets. Others mentioned will have to do some serious reshuffling of contracts, roster cuts or something just to make enough room under caps.

@Stymietee @deanpet21

Stafford got a deal that gave him $92M in guarantees, and averaged $27M per year.

Would either of you like to tell me how much he counted against their cap in 2017, and how much he will count in 2018??

I'm not interested in Stafford's deal, just making a comment about how much the contracts are getting to be. We all know that they can be set up in certain ways to make them more cap friendly.

I point out Stafford contract because it shows the flaw in the logic that Kirk will cost $30M against his next teams cap. At the end of the day unless he goes to a team that WANTS to front load his contract, I expect him to count between $25-$27M against the cap.

And unless we seriously backload Smiths deal, he will count around $20M against our cap, possibly more.

@deanpet21 , Grop's deal has 74-75M in guarantees. The 90M figure looks like the 3 year, cash payout, which includes the whole signing bonus. That's not his cap figure.

The only relevant point as to Cousins, is that you could've had him for 20-24M/year over the last 2 offseasons, but b/c you waited this long, he is out your price range. Was KC worth 24M/year last year?--after all, that's what you're paying Alex Smith now. Was KC worth 20-22M/year the year before that? Let's just say, I'm glad the Niners aren't going to make that mistake.

The Niners are overpaying Grop and betting on his future. Sure, he's the #1 paid QB right now, but in a few weeks, he'll #3 (Brees, Cousins), and in 2 years, after Ryan, Rodgers, Wilson, and Prescott all get new deals, It's doubtful he'll even be in the top 5. By the end of the 5 year contract, he'll be lucky to be in the top 10.
