From a salary cap perspective and growth to the team, he was a hindrance.
He had been from the moment Shaq left.

Tell me somethingThere were no better options. Nobody was coming to the Lakers with an ageing Kobe running the show.
The recent mistakes Mitch made was the signing/trading for Nash and Dwight and the signing of Deng and Mosgov. The latter screwed things up so bad Jeannie didn't have a choice.
Mitch was a fantastic GM though.
Tell me something
Besides Pau Gasol - what other large agents did Mitch sign?
Shaq and Kobe came from Jerry West work. I think Mitch quite possibly had an easy ride because of Kobe.
Those signings came because they wanted to play with Kobe - and Shaq in Karl and Gary's case. Had nothing to do with Mitch as a gm. They would have signed if you had been the gm. Same thing with Ron Artest. Chris Paul didn't sign with the Lakers - He did ask to be traded to the Lakers, but because he wanted to play with Kobe. Without Kobe as the attraction, Not saying Mitch was a bad gm, but wasn't that spectacular either and quite possibly Jim Buss was running the show. It's been well documented that Mitch was not a typical gm. I agree we could have done worse - like Phil JacksonNot including Karl Malone, Gary Payton, Steve Nash and Dwight?
Ron Artest: The reason the Lakers won Game 7 of the 2010 Finals
oh, and Chris Paul....

If the Lakers agreed with you - they wouldn't have fired himArtest hated Kobe before he joined the Lakers. The team needed a good defensive player and Mitch managed to convince him to sign - DESPITE Kobe.
And the Cp3 trade got vetoed by Stern but Mitch still orchestrated it. He also got Gasol for Kwame Brown and a bag of Funyuns.
Yes he was a spectacular GM.
If the Lakers agreed with you - they wouldn't have fired him![]()
The Bulls are a joke
I credit Jerry West for those first three. Jerry West is the one that signed Shaq and traded for Kobe.He was also a dinosaur who failed to deliver what he promised in the agreed upon time period.
Doesn't mean he did a bad job. How many other GMs delivered 5 NBA titles?

Mitch made a horrible trade when trading away Shaq and got lucky that Kwame Brown had the biggest expiring contract in the NBA at the time. Like I said - Mitch wasn't a bad GM, but He wasn't all that fantastic either

Yes, but then he turned around and traded for Chris Mihm and Kwame Brown. He signed Smush Parker and gave up Caron Butler. His trades took the Lakers into lottery land where they took Andrew Bynum who did help but wasn't that great. True enough that the Lakers signed Ron Artest, but they already had the other guy from the Orlando Trade that helped us win a championship. All in all Mitch made some pretty bad moves over the years. Not all of those moves were the works of a genius. The center piece of the Lakers was Kobe Bryant and lets not forget that their original plan was to rebuild the team over a five year team and they wasn't even trying to build a championship team until Kobe demanded that he be traded.Mitch had to trade Shaq. When you publicly scold the owner and tell him to pay you, while coming to camp out of shape and beefing with your young super start (Kobe); it's evident that he had to trade Shaq. Iirc, that trade netted you Odom who was a vital and big part of those two Lakers titles in '09 and '10. So it wasn't that bad.
Exactly - All he had to do was maintain the status quo of what Jerry West had already set up. The Lakers had some pretty lean years in between titles - years without being relevant. I liked Mitch Kupchak and was quite surprised when he was fired, but there was an article at the time of his firing that pointed out his bad moves - There were many of them.Mitch was the GM during those championship years. He was credited for acquiring vital players that made the championships possible.

Quite frankly - I would take Pat Riley over Mitch Kupchak any time.
Nobody is comparing GMs! This isn't a "who's better" discussion.
Fact of the matter is Mitch was a great GM who signed some fantastic players who led the team to five championships.

Name them:
Pau Gasol
Carl Malone - did nothing - he was old already
Gary Payton - He was okay, but not fantastic
