Iowa St was a .500 team BECAUSE they beat Oklahoma St. They lost to a team that would have otherwise not even made a bowl.

They were not among the 2 best teams in the country.

If they had gone undefeated, I could see the argument. But they lost, and they lost when they knew they had a chance at a National Championship, and they lost to a team that should have finished the year 5-7.

Alabama or LSU would have pulled their underwear up over their heads.

If they had gone undefeated, there would be no argument.

And they would have fucked up LSU

Over the upright is a missed FG. It has to be inside it.

And even if that was true, it was a tie game - they still should have won against a 5-7 team. When shit was on the line, they choked on a cupcake.

So what.
They would have crushed you or LSU.

This is always true.

If you don't want to leave it in the hands of people who can screw you with nebulous reasoning, at least win all of your games.

Not always true. Ask 2004 Auburn.

True. It is tough to avoid when five teams end up with no losses. Fortunately, that is a rare occurrence - and figures to be even rarer with 12+ game schedules.

Regardless, if you lose a game, it is pretty much a given that you will have an easier time if you run the table and get to be compared to undefeated teams than if you lose a game and are sitting in a much larger pool of one-loss teams. And if they ever expand the playoffs, the problems will only get worse, as the pool of two-loss teams is going to make decision making seem very arbitrary.

Alabama won the coaches in 1973 before losing to ND in the Sugar Bowl. Coaches arguably got it wrong, but that is hindsight, because they named the winner before the bowl game.
The only thing the coaches got wrong there was to not re-poll after the bowls.

I find it kind of ironic because that used to be the practice of the AP as well. The first time (or which I am aware at least) that the AP re-polled after the bowls was 1948 - allowing them to give the top spot to Michigan rather than Notre Dame who held it in what would normally be their final poll.

If that field goal was good, this was definitely a TD...so LSU wouldn't have played Okie Lite.

That play never sat right with me. But what can you do.

That's incorrect.

In 1948, Michigan held the top spot in the AP poll at the end of the season.

NDame was #1 in the AP Poll for only 2 weeks that season. The 1st poll on Oct 4th.
and the 5th Poll on Nov 1st. Michigan was #1 on 10/18, 10/25, 11/8, 11/15 and 11/22
and the final poll on 11/29.

The AP did not re-poll after the bowl games until the 1968 season.

No way. While Alabama obviously got the favorable position by playing LSU in the National Championship, the committee should have just had OSU and Bama play for second place and give LSU that trophy.

Look at their schedule that year, I can't think of one more difficult. They beat... #3 Oregon, #25 Mississippi State (Road), #16 West Virginia (Road), #17 Florida, #19 Auburn, #2 Alabama (Road), #3 Arkansas, and #12 UGA. I couldn't imagine anyone could find a tougher road than that.

Plus a team with the likes of Eric Reid, Claiborne, Taylor, Honeybadger, ODJ, Rueben Randle, Mingo, Logan, Brokers, Montgomergy up front, Minter in the MLB position. Shepard and Landry in the slot, and a bunch of monsters on the O-Line.

LSU in 2011 is the greatest team to never win a Natty.

To follow that up on the LSU Schedule, OSU played and beat... #8 Texas A&M (Road), #22 Texas (Road), #17 Kansas State, and #10 Oklahoma.

2011 OK St only beat us by 3 in the Fiesta Bowl. And without some of the stupidest goal line play calling ever by a head coach (David Shaw, that's you) Stanford would have won that game. Can't say I see OKState crushing everyone

They were a great team and might have won it all, but if we had an offensive coordinator worth a crap, OKState would have lost the Fiesta

I was confused a bit. You are usually spot on with the historical stuff, but I knew the AP and UPI
for that matter, didn't switch to voting, after the polls, until 1968. So I went and looked it up

2008-Texas beats Oklahoma by 10 on a neurtral field, has the same record as Oklahoma with our only loss being a last second great play on the road and yet the BCS lets Oklahoma go to the natl title game.
