They just did.
The best team didn't win the NC.

2011 - Oklahoma State/opportunity stolen/would have crushed anyone.
2004 - Auburn - obvious here.
1973 - Oklahoma, obviously better than ND or Ohio State
1949 - Oklahoma/ND stole one again.

Who else.

In 1977, Notre Dame was named National Champions. They were one of 6 teams in major conferences to have a 1 loss, no tie season. Other teams were Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, and Penn State. ND beat Texas who beat Arkansas. Alabama lost to Nebraska, ND lost to Ole Miss. Bama beat Ole Miss. Kentucky lost to Baylor and did not play Bama or Ole miss.

Notre Dame lost to Ole Miss and Alabama beat Ole Miss
Texas lost to Notre Dame
Arkansas lost to Texas
Kentucky lost to Baylor, who lost to both Arkansas and Texas
Alabama lost to Nebraska, did not play Kentucky
Penn State lost to Kentucky

I don't know if they got it wrong by selecting ND, but wow.

1975, 1-loss Oklahoma got NC over undefeated Arizona state. I wasn't sure where ASU fell on major conference or not then though. They were part of the WAC with Arizona and BYU. They beat Nebraska in the bowl game, but Oklahoma beat Nebraska too. They lost to Kansas.

1966 - Notre Dame and Michigan State both ended with a 9-0-1 record. Guess who they played for that tie. They were named co-NC. ND got the #1 rank from AP and Coaches poll.

1936...Minnesota shouldn't have been #1.

Slippery Rock beat Westminister 14-0...who beat WV Wesleyan 7-6...who beat Duquesne
2-0...who beat Pitt 7-0...who beat Notre Dame 26-0...who beat Northwestern 26-6...
who beat Minnesota 6-0.

Slippery Rock should have been #1.

1964 - AP and Coaches awarded Alabama the NC before the bowl games.

Alabama then lost to Texas in the Orange Bowl. However, Arkansas went undefeated, beat Texas during the season, and won their bowl game over Nebraska (who finished 9-2). Texas's only loss was to Arkansas.

Notre Dame was also undefeated heading into bowl games but lost to USC.

So, the 1-loss NC lost to 1-loss Texas who lost to undefeated and untied Arkansas. Also, Notre Dame was also 1-loss.

I agree about 2011. Oklahoma State was more deserving than Alabama, who had already lost to LSU at home.

As to 1973 and 1949, dream on.

Of those two, the better case for Oklahoma is 1973. May you can fight Alabama for that one ...

Meh...they can have '64 when we can have '66.

Alabama had a piece of the '64 and '65 title and was unbeaten and untied in '66.

As for Oklahoma St. They struggled with every ranked opponent they played except the Sooners...and they lost to an otherwise .500 team in Iowa St.

We demolished every ranked opponent we played with the exception of LSU...which we settled in the rematch.

1984 BYU should have never been awarded the natty that year. It was a fvckn travesty.

Washington could have prevented it - but they shat the bed against USC.
Washington beat OU in the Orange Bowl and that should have been enough right there. BYU is the only team in the history of the AP poll to win a natty while never beating a top 25 team.

The real travesty that yar was that BYU, due to WAC Bowl agreements, couldn't muster a better bowl opponent than a 6-6 Michigan team.

But after watching Robbie Boscoe win that game with a broken leg, I would never take anything away from that BYU team.

I am long over 2011. Yes, I thought Oklahoma State deserved it over Alabama then and for years after. Now I have gotten to the point where I don't care anymore. But since you brought it up, I will try my best.

At the time bowls were being selected,

Alabama had 2 wins vs ranked opponents. Arkansas was at #7 with a 10-2 record and Penn State was sitting at 24th with a 9-3 record. They lost to LSU who was #1 and 13-0. They did not play Georgia or South Carolina.

Oklahoma State had 4 wins vs ranked opponents. Kansas State was #11 with a 10-2 record, Baylor was #15 with a 9-3 record, TCU was #16 with a 10-2 record, and Oklahoma was #19 with a 9-3 record. As you said, ISU was a .500 team that finished 6-6 on the season.

Now Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss on Alabama's schedule heading into bowl season 6-6 or worse. Texas A&M, Iowa State, Texas Tech and Kansas on Oklahoma State's schedule had 6-6 record or worse heading into bowl season.

Oklahoma State defeated, and played, more ranked opponents (at the time of bowl selection and in final rankings) and faced less teams who did not have a winning record. So, the question comes down to who do you pick? The team that has more wins vs ranked opponents or the one who has the worse loss? I would think I want the team for their winning and not their losing.

In the end, the tie-breaker was supporting the narrative of SEC superiority in the hopes of getting my eyebones focused to the TV.

Alabama won the coaches in 1973 before losing to ND in the Sugar Bowl. Coaches arguably got it wrong, but that is hindsight, because they named the winner before the bowl game.

Like I said, i am over it. I really don't care anymore that they did pick Alabama, but I was kind of challenged. But it was 6 seasons ago. We almost needed it for CFP.
