BR War has it

1 Mike Schmidt 106.5
2 Eddie Mathews 96.4
3 Wade Boggs 91
4 George Brett 88.4
5 Chipper Jones 85

Chipper was great and will deserve his HOF votes when he gets in, but he is not the best 3b or Switch Hitter to have ever played the game.
Problem with WAR is that it includes defense, it also is based on how many years and how many games played, not to mention the replacement player of that specific year...

Mike Shmidt had a 17.6 dWAR vs chipper -1.6... if you want a more accurate WAR, take those numbers subtract the defensive WAR and then divide it by plate appearances... I Know Chipper would still not be in first, but he would be ahead of Boggs, Brett and Mathews... In fact I will do that now, just to see what the MORE accurate numbers would be...

What exactly is that based on?

The numbers say otherwise...do you have certain info that's not reflected in the numbers that makes Brett much better offensively than Jones?
Much better hitter, more power, could hit to all fields and no steroids.

that changed the WAR order to:
1. Eddie Mathews
2. Mike Schmidt
3. Chipper Jones
4. Wade Boggs
5. George Brett

But again, that replacement player is not the same player...

Chipper's slugging % was 99 points better than the league average over his career, compared to 92 points for Brett. If you want strictly home runs, Chipper had more top 10 finishes in HR and finished with 150 more (which even after adjusting for league differences, is still an advantage for Chipper). Chipper hit 48% more career home runs than Brett, whereas the frequency of HRs hit in the '90s and '00s was about 25ish% more than the levels in the '70s and '80s, so do the math.

Like I said, your claims are pretty ridiculous and based on nothing.

I don't disagree about looking through the context of seasons... But you cant talk about how a player leads the league in something or not for that year... Maybe there was someone better that year, like Bonds was better than Chipper... and how is 259-209 a negative... that is almost 40-60, most players have a little boost at home...

Don't see any knock on Chippers offense... His problem was that he was a bad defensive player... But this thread is not about defense...

Just pointing out that Mathews is the rare 500 HR hitter who hit more on the road than at home. A poster on another site showed info that indicated he was probably the most screwed by his home park of all the 500 HR hitters, and Milwaukee hurt him about as bad as Yankee hurt DiMaggio. Milwaukee was bad for Aaron, too, but then he got a late career boost from the Launching Pad in Atlanta.
Ignoring league leaderships, I think the numbers all around favor Schmidt and Mathews over Jones...they both beat him in career OPS+, for example.
I don't know if Chipper was really bad at 3B, but nobody talked about moving Brooks Robinson to LF in the middle of his career, right?

I would say No. Chipper is a first ballot HOF player, who in his prime was very reliable to hit .300 and have 30 HRs and 100 RBIs and he was incredible in '99 but IMO Eddie Matthews is the GOAT.

Career wise, I'd probably rank them like this.

1. Schmidt
2a Jones
2b Matthews
4. Brett
5. Boggs

If we are talking primes, that's a very different discussion, however.

I don't get the a/b thing.

Are you saying they're tied or Jones was better then Matthews?

Miguel Cabrera thinks reading this thread is a waste of time.

And I agree.

Except for the fact that Cabrera has played more games at 1b then 3b.

He won back to back MVPs and a triple crown while playing there. (Tigers infield would be better with him there instead of Nicky C.).

I didn't realize there were game restrictions.

Chippers also a big time conspiracy theorist, he be a great addition to The Hoop, IMO.

But Id rather have Edgar Martinez or Miggy manning the hot corner. (Game restrictions not withstanding.)
