Can they trade him?

They'd still get NAILED by what they owe him, unless some team agreed to take on all that guaranteed, which forget it. Cowboys would have to offer Romo and like 2 1sts to saddle some team with that contract.

Tony Romo

So IF they trade him AND a team agrees to take on the FULL remaining contract, they'd STILL get hit with $25M this year, $20M next. Trade deadline this year is in a couple weeks so probably not gonna happen, and no team is trading for him this year anyway because he's out until week 9-10.

Best case is this offseason. But again, $20M cap hit if a team takes on the full contract, which prob. wont happen. Best case scenario is Romo agrees to a re-structure, again... lol.

We'll all find out soon enough if Jerry Jones is the new Al Davis... If Romo is playing, and Dak is still playing well, then there is no doubt in my mind that JJ has been taken over by the ghost of Al Davis...that would be one of the dumber decisions he's made...right behind running Jimmy Johnson out of town...

I gotta say though. Cowboys are in a good position. Their offense is set for the future and they can still roll Romo out when he's healthy this year and next year. Just because Dak is winning games doesn't mean he's the full on 100% answer NOW. He's enjoying the best line in the NFL and a talented runningback. His defense isn't great, but that might change IF Jaylon Smith ever recovers. If Smith pulls a Graham/AP then that defense is IMMEDIATELY better.

Romo comes back, put Dak back on the bench - especially as teams get hungry for the playoffs and competition IN playoffs (if Dallas makes it) is a whole new ball game. Tell the kid, "Hey great job, but we're putting in a guy who's been there before. You're our future, so just be patient." And in 1 1/2 years the Cowboys could be VERY deadly. Cut Romo, take all that extra cap, acquire some pieces... draft well (hard to do, but let's just say) and Boys might be visiting an SBOWL in the not too distant future.

Regardless of Dak's progress, the Cowboys are STUCK with Romo for at least this year and the next because of his stupid contract re-negotiation. They literally CANNOT cut him due to the insane dead cap hit over this period.

So Jerry will probably start Romo as soon as he's healthy because of that factor... probably to justify the stupidest QB contract of all time... even topping Flacco.

If we cut him before next year we have a decent cap savings. This is the only year we are "stuck" with him.

Dead money is dead, no use worrying over it now. We save $5M in cap space if we cut him pre-6/1

I really hope they don't bring Romo back against the Steelers....That smells like a disaster.

Bottom line is that you bring Romo back when he is healthy. If he gets hurt again, you know you have a backup ready to go. It's a no lose situation. Dak knows what he can do now and knows that his time is coming soon. He shouldn't be a distraction if they ask him to take a back seat, he knows he is literally one play from being the starter again.

If we make Romo a June 1st cut next year we actually save 5 Mil on the cap so we will have an interesting decision next offseason.

Dak will start sucking about the same time Romo gets "healthy" so this will take care of itself.

Wait... you and fordman both stated this. How does it work again? Was there something I missed in spotrac's contract breakdown? If dead cap is $45M at the moment how do they save $5M in cap by cutting him when his actual cap hit is like $20M?

Educate me please :)

So if we we just let Romo play during the 2017 season and not cut him by June 1st we would own him 24.7Mil but if we cut him we would owe the prorated signing bonus of all remaining years which is 19.6 Mil. This would actually be a savings of 5.1 mil in 2017 and 25.2 Mil in 2018 etc.

We play Gb have a bye and than Romo is slated to return. So unless you mean Dak completely shits the bed against GB this really makes no sense.

Guess it makes no sense then, because the Packers are shit against the pass. If Dak sucks against them you guys better get looking for another QB.

Romo is the clear cut established starter, he got injured it should be his job when he comes back. If that does happen and he can't finish the season, that will likely be the end of the Romo era in DAL.

I get what you're saying... but wondering why the #s differ so largely from Spotrac, which is a pretty known and reputable site... hmm...

Key is if he's cut before or after June 1st 2017. Pre June 1st is money all counts in 17, post June 1st the money is spread over 17 and 18.

Numbers are the same they just put signing bonus and restructure bonus together for the 10.7 Mil. Everything else is the same numbers I used to explain it. Also if you look at sportrac it shows you the two numbers I was referencing 19.6 Mil and 24.7 Mil I just tried to explain how those numbers are calculated.

OH FOR THE LOVE OF F'ING GOD! I'm looking at 2015!? WTF...

K, I'm done drinking. For real this time. Jesus Christ.

Cowboys, Fordman, Manster, I have ridiculously wasted your time. I don't know how to apologize, but... here's a happy giraffe.

The red line got me... I mean it's red. Blood... shark, red? The defense rests.
