The Washington Redskins 2015 third round pick Matt Jones had every opportunity to be the team's featured running back this season but literally fumbled it away in Week 7 against the Detroit Lions. With three fumbles in 2015 and eight total in two seasons, it's become a clear issue for Jones. After losing starting job in week eight to rookie RB Robert Kelley, it's led many to wonder what the future holds for Jones in a Redskins uniform.
I think Jones, 23, deserves another chance to compete this offseason with the Redskins. He's the youngest back on the team and showed flashes of competence prior to being benched. Albeit on less carries, Jones had 4.6 yards per attempt this season while Kelley had 4.3. Jones has also proven to be a better receiver out the backfield. While he does have other issues such as forgetting he's 6ft 2, 227 lbs in the open field, he has talent. In my opinion, the Redskins' backfield is not solidified for 2017. Kelley showed flashes, but still has much to prove before crowing him a featured back.
It's clear that general manager Scot McCloughan likes both of these backs. But I'm pretty sure he isn't ready to walk away from the third round pick in his first draft with the team. If Jones can fix his fumbling issues, which isn't a given, he remains a viable piece to this backfield.
surprisingly good pick by kieper for us
Wow, classless shot...
