Are you shocked at this? I certainly am not

not shocked they lost ... they had scrubs and rejects ... but the talent level was in no way inferior to the germans ... you would think a former nhl coach could outcoach a guy whos only coaching experience is national team tournament hockey :noidea:

Does both the USA and Canada missing the Gold Medal game pretty much force the NHL to allow its players to play in the next Olympics?

no that has nothing to do with anything ... if they go to the Beijing 2022 Olympics it will be because the IOC will basically decide to pay them to go

Didn't know if there would be pressure on the NHL because of this or not.

and I think Bettman now has more leverage. The gold medal game here will now feature the Germans and a team from a country that isnt even allowed to fly its flag. TV Ratings in North America were in the tank already and theres a palpable feeling that its made these entire Olympics less of an event than they have been in the past.

I think the NHL wants to go to Beijing moreso than they wanted to go to Korea. They will be ok with playing in the middle of the night since they will be primetime playing in a country of 1.5 billion AS LONG AS they get paid for it

Nobody has enjoyed these Olympics more than Gary Bettman. He's going to leverage this with the players, with the IOC and with NBC when TV rights renewals come up. And like you say, he wants to go to China anyway so this is all just cherries on top of the dim sum.

That's true. I was looking at it from the point of view of pissed of fans rather than the business dud it will be.

lots of fans were pissed off way back when it came out the league was thinking of skipping these olympics ... that didnt change the NHLs opinion about anything ... since when have they cared about the fan ? :noidea:
