This might go very good or blow up in their faces (apropos considering it is the Hurricanes):

Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with goaltender Scott Darling on a four-year contract through the 2020-21 season. The deal will pay Darling a total of $16.6 million and carries an average annual value of $4.15 million per season.

"Obviously Scott could have waited until July 1, to see what other options he might have as an unrestricted free agent," said Francis. "But he believes in what we are trying to do here and we are thrilled that he is committing to the Hurricanes and to Raleigh."

Yeah, there's pretty much no halfway there.

The money is good for a goalie with his mechanics and potential. Now he just needs to show he can play that way behind that D.

Carolina might have a top 5 defence in the next couple years. If their forwards start doing a better job of keeping the puck in the offensive zone he'll have no reason to not succeed.

I cant recall who it was this week in the cesspool who said it, but the "general consensus" amongst nhl gms is that darling doesnt have good technique ... mind you tim thomas wasnt a technical goalie

Hes hasnt been allowed in the cesspool for 3 or 4 years now (which one could say is telling lol)

It was Lebrun or bobmac

Didn't know that. It just sounded like something he'd run off at the mouth for.

Darling's not the most brilliant guy, but he has really good foot movement and his puck tracking is pretty solid. I can't imagine that a lot of GMs think he's that terrible technically when MAF and Quick are still in the league.

I have no clue how either one of those guys makes half the saves they do.

Well Nashville is into the conference finals for the first time in team history. Be interesting to see who their opponent will be.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Devils GM Ray Shero says he has confirmed with agent Jay Grossman that Ilya Kovalchuk definitely wants to return to the NHL next season

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Shero says Grossman free to speak to other teams about a potential deal. Devils would do a sign and trade. But deal has to make sense for NJ

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Kovalchuk can't officially sign an NHL contract until July 1. So lots of time for all this to play out. But the Kovalchuk sweepstakes are on

Call me crazy, but a top line of Gaudreau - Monahan - Kovalchuk could be intriguing.

/For the record, I'm no fan of Kovalchuk.

Bob McKenzie‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Regardless, Kovalchuk is non-factor for expansion draft. Not eligible to be taken, not eligible to be exposed/protected. He's on VRL Island.

Bob McKenzie@TSNBobMcKenzie
So in answer to many questions, no, 2017 draft picks cannot be in play as part of any Kovalchuk trade and expansion draft total non-factor.

Bob McKenzie‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Also reasonable to assume Kovalchuk not interested in being part of NJ rebuild; he's returning to NHL for immediate/legit chance to win Cup

Unless a first is included in a trade I don't move him for picks. If they move him for 2nd/3rd round picks a year from now who knows how long those take to become relevant players, Hall is not re-signing here if the team is still struggling.

Kovalchuk-Turris-Stone would be great. Passes from Karlsson to Kovalchuk? Yes please.
