I'm pretty sure LA didn't want to deal Bishop to a division rival if it could be avoided.

Bob McKenzie‏ @TSNBobMcKenzie
CGY, as it was last summer, was in on trade talks to get Ben Bishop's rights before LA ultimately dealt him to DAL.

Bob McKenzie‏ @TSNBobMcKenzie
It's believed Bishop's preference was to be dealt to DAL. BTW, Bishop played junior hockey in Texas.

Did Flames ownership kill a Bishop deal last summer? Elliotte Friedman says they did.

“I’m under the impression there have been no talks yet between Dallas and Bishop, but now obviously that’s going to start,” said NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman during a radio hit on Toronto’s Sportsnet 590 only minutes after the deal was announced. “And there is some history here. Last year at the draft, Dallas did get permission to talk – or at least talked with Tampa about acquiring Ben Bishop. It was something they discussed, and ultimately decided not to do.

“And you’ll remember last year Ben Bishop thought he was going to Calgary. He thought he had a six-year deal worth somewhere between $36-39 million and that deal was killed by Calgary ownership at the end of the day.

“So we’ll see what his new deal looks like compared to this one.”

Eh. I dunno bout that one. Can't imagine Burke standing for that kind of ownership meddling. Or even ownership being that dumb.

Unless a first is included in a trade I don't move him for picks. If they move him for 2nd/3rd round picks a year from now who knows how long those take to become relevant players, Hall is not re-signing here if the team is still struggling.

pretty tough to peg a value on him. really depends on how many bidders are involved.

balance between who is willing to pay a price to NJ for the right to still have to meet Kovalchuk's price,
versus NJ having to get something, anything! for an asset that won't otherwise be of use to them

Bishop's going to be great for Dallas, fills a need for them IMO.

Stars got Bishop (still have to sign him) and now with the Ducks in the WCF, the 2nd round pick they got back in the Eaves trade with the Ducks has turned into a 1st round pick.

Well, that didn't take long.

The Dallas Stars have signed goaltender Ben Bishop to a six-year, $29.5 million contract. The holds an average annual value of $4.92 million through the 2022-23 season. The 30-year-old posted a 18-15-5 record with a 2.54 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage this season.

6 years given his age and position is a bit long, but he totally has the potential to make that cap hit look like a steal for 3-4 years.

Especially when you consider what Dallas spent on goalies this year and the return on that investment.

So how much will DAL have to pay Vegas to take one of their other goalies in the Draft?

That's actually a bargain for Bishop. Dallas got a steal there.

Less than it'll probably cost to buy out the other one.
