The Reds trivia thing has been fun and it still is but it's kind of limiting. Anyone want to just open it up to regular baseball trivia?

Big D would be in for that, I am sure.

:agree::10:

I will hope that we can count on your Reds fan buddies to keep us in questions, as I am a good answer, but not as good an asker.

that would be ron perranoski. amazing pitching staff. if you ever get a chance to watch game 7 of the 1965 world series, do it. we think chapman, and some of the other modern lefty power throwers, are quick. in that game koufax was fast, very fast. to the naked eye, it looked to me like the consistently quickest i've ever seen. there was a future reds 20 game winner who pitched in that game for the opposition.

Hmmm ... '65 Twins. I think the answer was Jim Merritt, who did win 20 for the Reds in 1970.

As I remember the '63 W.S., it was the beginning of the end for the Yankees as we knew them. Even though they won the '64 pennant, they were about to hit the skids. The late '60s were not kind to the Bronxers.

I could add that they had some rather interesting people who played amid that decline.
Phil Linz ... who got in trouble for doing what on the team bus?

Yeah, Linz was playing the face harp.
He wasn't quite as amazing as the Kekich-Peterson wife swap deal.

jim merrit. absolutely correct john u. in fact, yogi managed the '64' club. mantle's career took a nosedive after 1964. knees and a personal life that was sadly beginning to spiral out of control. the mick broke a lot of young fans hearts, with his behavior, near the end of his playing days. he did, however, later atone for those indiscretions. yanks didn't transition, or re-tool well as their stars got older. but, there were some characters on that team. jim bouton being one of them. he another guy that took a nosedive after 1964. the AL had some good teams in the late 60's. orioles got our old 30 year old franky, and we all know what he did in 66. red sox, tigers, twins, and the A's were getting better every year. it's one of my favorite eras of baseball. hence, the 68 reds moniker, which is now chico ruiz. maybe i should change it to clay carroll. what controversial pitcher -indirectly related to this post- did the reds deal away in the '68' trade that brought the reds carroll, cloninger, and woodward?

The '69 Reds were a curious lot. With all that hitting, they went through pitchers like water through a strainer. At one point off and on during that year, three pitchers on the staff had at one time or another lost at least 20 games in a season -- Al Jackson, Fat Jack Fisher and Pedro Ramos. Jackson and Fisher pitched for the rotten Mets.

As well, Cloninger lost 17 that year and Cam Pascual, who was also on the staff part of the time, had once lost 18. Pascual and Ramos were pretty old by then and I think Cincy just signed anybody they could get. The adage: Hold the Reds to 9 runs and you have a chance.

I remember being old enough to hear a lot of people say Pascual was one of the most hard-luck pitchers in baseball, probably good enough for the H of F, but had the misfortune of pitching for the old Senators, who truly sucked. Clearly he got better after the team moved to Minnesota. Not sure why those two facts equate.

Look at Clay Carroll's 1969 stats. Lots of "finishes" but not many saves.

Sticking with 1969, the Reds drafted Don Gullett in the June 1969 first round. Gullett is one of four Reds' June first round picks to appear in a World Series for the Reds.

Who are the other three?

Hint: Two were pitchers, one is a position player.

Jack Armstrong?

Wild guess on the other ... Tom Browning.

I worded the question wrong, it is supposed to be on World Series winning teams. I also think it's five total including Gullett. Four pitchers and one position player.

The article I read is wrong, I know of another to make it five.

Gullett is one.
Armstrong is two.

Nothing better than trivia where the questions and answers keep changing.

One of other pitchers appeared on the 75-76 teams, the other pitcher and position player appeared on the 1990 team.

Unrelated to trivia. I was coming across 1-90 the other day and looked over and saw the "Steel Yard". Is that where the Railcats play John? Looked pretty new.
