If you don't know who John Wayne was, feel free to leave the country. From a woman's point of view - this is what a man should be. Being with a man like that....well, you know you're a woman.

Now....he made so many great ones - to many for a poll.

Mine is El Dorado.

Billed as, "The big one with the big two" because it also starred Robert Mitchum. (and a very young James Caan).

Yes, it was basically the same picture as "Rio Bravo" ten years earlier but it had a little more comedy to it.

Only a John Wayne character could kill a man's son, drop his body off to his dad and eventually say, "You got any more questions you wanna ask"?

So many great moments....

"Did you shoot him or didn't you"

"Well sorta...I hit the sign and the sign hit him".

***************

"That guy don't play the piano very well".

"You shootin' the strings out of it didn't help none, either".

******************************

And that whole canteen scene where we meet Mississippi. First thing John does? Protect the ladies. *swoon*. He send them away because it's about to get real.

PS...remember that tonic Mississippi made for the sheriff? I looked up the ingredients once while I was watching the movie. HOLY COW! He's lucky to have been alive.

Rio Bravo is my favorite western of his.

My favorite overall movie with Wayne in it is The Longest Day. He plays a Lt. Col. From the 82d Airborne.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

One of the movies where you can see he was a better actor than he's given credit for. (Also some of the best black-and-white cinematography ever, not to mention a very nasty Lee Marvin.)

John Wayne was so natural, and typecast so many times, that I can understand people thinking he wasn't much of an actor. When I was young I thought that. But I was wrong.
