Oswalt could have something left but he has had so many issues with his back the last couple seasons. Surgery might be the only solution for him.

looking at his September stats it appears that he still has something left in the tank. he made 6 starts, 41.0 IP, 38 hits his record was only 3-2 but he went 6.0 in 1 game 6.1 in another and the rest were 7 innings or more. i don't think he's the answer if CJ walks but if we keep CJ i might let Colby go and bring in Oswalt

So you're going to let the best postseason pitcher the Rangers have..... go?

I pick up Colby's option in a heartbeat.

I remember talk about him retiring earlier in the year. I think there's a good chance.

It may take a surgery or two to get that monkey off CJ's back.

Colby's post season abilities alone are worth picking up his option even if he is the #4 or #5 pitcher next season.

so based on nothing but post-season you'd pass on an upgrade. colby went 14-10 and led the ML in homeruns allowed. Oswalt had a down year and still is a better REGULAR season pitcher than Colby.

Oswalt has started 326 ML games and has a record of 159-93 and has started 11 post-season games with a record of 5-2.

Lewis has started 98 ML games and has a record of 38-38 and in 7 post-season starts with a record of 4-1.

based on these numbers if given a choice of either of the 2, i would take Oswalt.

I might make the trade of Oswalt for Lewis, but the price would have to be right. And with this last season and his injuries, it might be.

so you're willing to ignore his regular season short-comings including his giving up more homers this season than another starter in baseball

See my above post. If nothing else thought his option is reasonable enought it might be worth it just to have him as a trade piece.

and i agree but Oswalt made 6 starts in September and seemed to have recovered from his back issues. i would insist on medical exams prior to any contract. and i would only do it if we sign CJ or a compatible-level starter to replace CJ. with that and Derek, Alexi & Matt, we could look for an upgrade on Colby. i see Colby as the weak link in our regular season staff

I would feel more comfortable doing that than going after Darvish.

and from reading comments made by the Rangers toward the end of the season and during the early post-season their interest in Darvish has diminished as the interest by other teams has increased. it seems now that the Rangers are more intent on re-signing CJ and then looking at maintaining their starter & relief staffs as they are now. that would require re-signing Michael Gonzalez and either re-signing Oliver or looking at another lefthander to replace him.

that being said, they may still look at an upgrade at the one starter position that is a regular season weak spot.

and next season, given Holland's emergence in this post-season Holland will probably be our best post-season starter
