The best voice I've ever heard in metal would be Sebastian Bach. My favorite from back in the day is probably Dave Mustain though. Not that big of a fan of the band but as far as overall... David Draiman is really hard to beat.

Great list!

Glenn Danzig and Chino Moreno (early albums) are two more of my favs. Maynard too, if he counts. They're classics to me.

Kevin DuBrow (Quiet Riot) was sweet, too.

What? No love for Robert Plant or Roger Daltrey?
Potato salad!

I thought of both of them but I don't consider The Who or Zeppelin heavy metal...

I don't think GnR really qualifies as actual "heavy metal", though. But yeah, dude's voice is unmistakable/iconic, at least it used to be.

Who the fuck voted for Hetfield? He took the spot just because they didn't want to introduce another body after Mustaine left the band. He and the rest of the band have stated multiple times that he is just a place holder.

Neither are true heavy metal vocalists even if Zeppelin has a few metalish songs. If we're talking hard rock they deserve a spot.

Few people will recognize the name, but Iced Earth's Matt Barlow needs to be on this list
He's great too, but not really what I'd consider classic metal. For me that means 70's to early 80's

Not a Queensryche fan?

Ozzy is kind of annoying to be honest, he talks to much during songs... Love him but he needs to shut up and sing, you don't need to liven up the crowd every 20 seconds...

and the difference between heavy metal and hard rock is what? At least from the 70s thru the 90's.

Glad to see Tate on there. Underrated as fuck. He, Dio, and Halford are usually my top 3 for the total package. Going with Dio here though.

Ozzy has a great voice but he was never an outstanding vocalist if that makes sense. Kind of similar to Lemmy in that regard.

Zeppelin and The Who are definitely not metal. And I love me some Bon Scott era AC/DC, but they aren't metal either really.

Couldn't go wrong with Bruce, Halford, Tate and I agree that Bach probably doesn't get as much credit as he should (same with Skid Row in general, their 2nd and 3rd albums are extremely underrated IMO).

But for me personally it is and always will be Dio.

Like so many of the rock sub genres it's hard to explain or define. Lots of grey area.

The Who to me are clearly not a metal group and Zeppelin never really fit the bill either. Sabbath was IMO the first real metal band and the genre didn't really take off until around Priest's third album.

Probably the easiest way to give my take is to use examples.

Hard Rock: AC/DC, Aerosmith, Queen, GNR
Metal: Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Metallica, Megadeath

Then of course there are bands that sort of bridge the gap like the Scorpions, Deep Purple, Rainbow, etc.

I guess I'd also add that beyond very early metal groups (like Sabbath) metal tends to have more classical influence (see Randy Rhoads) and hard rock tends to be more blues based (see Angus Young).

Just my opinion though.

Yeah you're right, kinda forgot about the "classic" caveat

My thoughts exactly... I think Dio had the perfect heavy metal voice and I love me some Priest but Queensryche was always my favorite and that's because of Geoff Tate, with a little shoutout to DeGarmo's writing... IMO Rage for Order might be the most underrated album of all time...
