Just curious as to how everyone would rank all time SS - specifically Derek Jeter (since he is a popular subject this season).... Jeter will certainly make the HOF, but where does he rank among the all time greats?.... I've seen some lists that put him in the top five, and some that have him outside the top ten....

This is a list of SS with more than 10 years PT and an annual average BR WAR of 3.0 or greater:

Honus Wagner HOF
Alex Rodriguez
Arky Vaughan HOF
Cal Ripken HOF
George Davis HOF
Lou Boudreau HOF
Pee Wee Reese HOF
Ozzie Smith HOF
Robin Yount HOF
Joe Sewell HOF
Luke Appling HOF
Barry Larkin HOF
Jack Glasscock
Art Fletcher
Derek Jeter
Bill Dahlen
Ernie Banks HOF
Joe Tinker HOF
Alan Trammell
Joe Cronin HOF
Nomar Garciaparra
Phil Rizzuto HOF
Luis Aparicio HOF
Al Dark
Dave Bancroft HOF
Vern Stephens
Rafael Furcal
Rico Petrocelli

Apologies to the greats that missed the cut. Feel free to add, if they make your top ten.

Steve,
You've gotta go to the woodshed on this one leaving Banks off your list was blasphemous. Now lets play two.

Shout out to my favorite SS growing up as a Cubs fan, Shawn Dunston. He had a rocket for an arm & always played all out.

#The Shawn O Meter

Shawon Duston - believe it or not.:help:

yeah, Ripken seems like an easy top 5 SS to me. One of the better hitting shortstops and he had an excellent glove.

Maybe Ripken just didn't have enough longevity for Hammer?

:noidea:

First, it is not my list. I just listed the players with a 3 or greater average season WAR.

Banks has a 3.5526 average - good for 17th (just behind Dahlen). On the OPS+ list, he's 6th...

(On JAWS, he's 7th)....

In all seriousness, I'd take Cal Ripken over any other SS

I'd take Honus Wagner and I'd make him sign his card for me. I'd ask him for a little tobacco spit for a DNA test to prove the cards authenticity. Then I'd just retire.

Only shortstops I'd take over Ripken are Wagner and Vaughan. Maybe A-Rod (depends on whether you see him as a SS/3B?).

Can't you just retire if you have the baseball card?

I agree.

And, your ARod sentiments brings up another Jeter related topic... Why didn't NY shift Jeter to third when they aquired a better defensive short stop?

And, how would Jeter stack up against all time 3B - where defense is less important?

Interesting that Jeter's wOBA/RC (.364/121) numbers are about equal to Scott Rolen (.368/122), and their careers started in 1996 and 1995 respectively, Jeter gets points for having 4k more PA's though.

You would think Jeter's skill set would play well at third base, sure hands, decent arm, long wing span, but you never know. He never was great at getting jumps on balls off the bat.

Interesting..... I added Jeter to the list of 3B... Based on WAR/YR like my original list, Jeter drops from 15th SS to 18th 3B... (i'm not sure how they calulate the different replacment value between SS & 3B).

Speaking of where Derek Jeter ranks, has anyone else read Rick Reilly's embarrassing love letter to Jeter's kids? This might seriously be the most ridiculous think Reilly has written and that's saying a great deal.

Wow. I couldn't finish it. I thought I might puke and I don't really dislike Jeter. "The best player in baseball for 10 straight years" ??? LOL It could pass for an Onion parody with very little revision. Reilly needs to hang em up.

You would leave Cal Ripken off your list?

Aside from all the absurd hype that Cal brought MLB when it needed it the most, he wasn't a top 10 all-time SS. I'd take Rafael Furcal over him.
