Please look at Goldschmidt's resume.

Now look at Trout's.

Back to Goldschmidt's.

Now looks at Harper's resume.

And back to Goldschmidt's.

What's this? Posey's resume. Look at this.

And finally back to Goldschmidt's resume.

Are you going to stand behind your inclusion of Goldy in the class of Posey, Trout and Harper RIGHT NOW?
I guess Goldschmidt has no chance. It's ludicrous to mention him in the same sentence as players that can barely drink legally. That's my bad.

When you look at the resumes of those players who can barely drink legally, no. He cannot be mentioned in the same sentence RIGHT NOW.

Come back in a couple years when Goldy HAS a resume, and we will talk.

How can someone say that Miggy won't be remembered as an elite HOFer 20 years from now.. the guy could easily end up top 10 in every major statistical category.. I mean seriously...

If Miggy were to retire tomorrow, he wouldn't be top 10 in every major category, and hence likely wouldn't be remember as an elite HOFer (which was cal's point).

Goldschmidt getting a late start is likely to hurt him...I mean, the guy's 28 and only has 2 full great years under his belt.

Did not realize he was that old already...

Yea....he went to college for 3 years it looks like, probably because he was't a high draft pick out of college (49th round).

Just doing some quick number crunching, he'd need to average 167 hits a year until age 38 just to get 2,500 and would need to average 35 HR a year (career high is 36) to get 500.

so he will clearly not reach any milestones(at least it is very improbable)... But if he strings in 5 more seasons of this type of ball he will be very close... If he is a top 10 oWAR7 1B of all time at the end of his career, I think he should make it...

with that said, do you think todd helton is a HOFer??

Goldy is a power hitter that will need to reach some of the milestones to get in. Stan just stated that he would need to average almost his career high to reach 500. Whereas Boggs was all about the BA for most of his career.

The HoF standard is a lot higher for 1st basemen than it is for 3rd basemen though.

Of the 19 1B 4 have hit 500 hrs 3B 2 of 11
all i meant was they started their careers at the same age though Boggs was good right away

Both harper and trout look like the real deal but alot of things can derail a career just ask griffey jr:suds:

But a good amount of the 1B in the hall were deadball/early baseball history players from when it was abnormal to be hitting 20 HR a season.

Goldschmidt's in an era where guys like Paul Konerko, Carlos Delgado, Jason Giambi (good careers but by no means HOFers) are hitting well over 400 HR.

Shit..

Totally forgot Ichiro was still active.

Paps has no shot and it is WAY early for Kimbrel. Closers need LONG careers to even become borderline.
I can't believe someone would even mention Papelbon. I have a better shot than he does and so do you. Closers , regardless of stats , are gonna face an uphill battle to get serious consideration. They should , in fact they should get no consideration at all.

I see this argument, but apply it more so to DHs than closers. But I understand the argument.

I don't think it will be too much longer and closers will be put in their rightful place. Guys who occasionally picked up 3 outs and didn't blow a 3 run lead are not giants of the game. It's starting now and more people will be coming out and admitting what most fans already know , it simply isn't asking much of a pitcher these days. Can you imagine what a guy like Sparky Lyle would do with these save rules today? He might save 110 games a yr.

The game is FINALLY getting to the point where the bully is getting proper respect as a whole, and the "closer" position is more of a timing issue than a quality issue. I think the 7th inning guy typically ends up seeing more stressful situations than the "closer".

For the Giants this year, George Kontos was used almost exclusively as a "7th inning guy", but he almost always came in with runners in scoring position. Casilla, conversely, almost always came in with a clean slate. Who was more important and had a tougher job?

SP Kershaw, for sure. King Felix, probably. Maybe CC Sabathia, Greinke.
RP: If Chapman and Kimbrel stay healthy and out of jail, they have a chance. Trailing them is Kenley Jansen.

1B: Pujols, Miggy. I don't think there's a question with these two, personally.
2B: Maybe Utley? (He's 14th all time WAR at 2B - ahead of Jackie Robinson, Jeff Kent, Ryne Sandberg)
SS: I'd say Rollins but he might not be playing next year.
3B: Beltre. Remember he spent some prime years in "impossible to be a good hitter Safeco."
OF: If they keep it up I don't see who could say no to McCutcheon, Harper, and Trout. Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday deserve a look but ehhhhhhhh probably not (throw them into the Hall of Very Good).
