to be able to pull this off, would they have to restructure a few players and cut PH? 2.75 is too much to give him just to give aldon a breather here and there

Manning worked out for the 49ers on Tuesday night at Duke in Durham, N.C., with coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman witnessing a passing session that was described by a source as "very impressive."

It was impressive enough that the 49ers sent a doctor to Durham to administer a physical exam to Manning on Wednesday.

Matthew Mulligan - TE - Jets
Free agent TE Matthew Mulligan will visit the Rams and 49ers.
A blocking specialist, Mulligan played 40 percent of the Jets' offensive snaps last season, but caught just five passes for 58 yards. He won't be offered a role as a pass catcher on the open market.

Frank Summers - RB - Chargers
Free agent FB Frank Summers will work out for the 49ers next week.
A practice-squad warrior, Summers spent 2011 in San Diego, but never made it onto the active roster. He hasn't played a snap since 2009.

I hope the FO hasn't written off Byham. He was looking like a very versatile blocker, and even showed some things as a receiver in the preseason prior to the injury. I doubt he'd make much impact at all as a receiver, but if we can field blockers who also have some ability to catch, it would be a huge benefit. Miller and Byham have this potential.

Hey Ryan, can you update that original post to include the Manningham signing?

Ryan, Ian, you guys have some traditional cool hippie names!

But being from Canada, Ian's name should be something like Leblanc. Or Etienne.

who spiked ginn's egg nog

I'm guessing he realizes that return men get old pretty quickly in the NFL. Ginn probably understands that he is almost past prime for a return man and can extend his career if he can convince at least 1 team that he can catch a ball that came from a hand instead of a foot.

i think ginn might stand a better chance convincing clyde that smith is a legit nfl qb

Will say this, I hope with the mixture of losing some guys and adding new blood, that the lockerroom chemistry and commitment is there and remains unphased....

Q: What do you think of the San Francisco 49ers' WR signings? I like Randy Moss, but he could be washed up, and Mario Manningham is a No.2 receiver at best. Have they really improved the WR core that much?

-- Kevin (Rhode Island)

A: They've improved some, but I'm with you, Kevin, not all that much. Neither of those receivers can be counted on as a No. 1 wide receiver. And this is where the team has to be hoping that Michael Crabtree takes the next step and develops into the type of No. 1 wide receiver he hasn't been through the early part of his career. Moss should be able to help some. Manningham should be able to help some. But it's not as if the 49ers have solved their wide receiver issues and they're ready to move on. I still could see San Francisco looking for a receiver in the early part of the draft at some point.

FWIW: The agent for QB David Garrard reached out to the #49ers late last week, before news broke of team's interest in Peyton Manning. SF said it "felt comfortable" at the QB position. The Niners are one of the teams at the top of Garrard's wish list.

The more I think about it the more I think we should go with a cheaper bridge QB than Alex Smith so we can add to the rest of the team in free agency. David Garrad didn't play last season which fits in with our free agency criteria. He actually wants to play for us.

His best seasons were 2007 and 2010.
His WRs in 2007 were: Northcutt, Reggie Williams, and Ernest Wilford.
His WRs in 2010 were: Mike Wallace, a broken down Sims-Walker, and Jason Hill
Obviously Vernon Davis is superior to Michael Lewis but I gotta say we offer him the best supporting cast of his career here. He'll cost peanuts.

1. Smith'
2. Johnson
3. Garrard

Those are the QB's i would go after, ill honestly be fine with any one. Obviously if smith signs he will start with Kap pushing him and if we go with #2 or 3 then they battle it out with kap or tolzien

I cannot support David Garrad.... his best days are done, not necessarily physically but mentally. Think Tjax....

I rather roll with Kap!!!! at least see what we have is someone special or not.

We would be rolling with Kap. Garrard could be the backup.

49ers are holding a Pro Day workout for 30 or so free agents. First of its kind for the team. The hope is to find a diamond in the rough.

OT Alex Barron is one of the many.

"Raiders reached agreement with former 49ers CB Shawntae Spencer."
