We were never in it. It was just standings in our favor in early July. Don't let numbers fool you.

Well, they did surprise us for a while, had the whole area talking "wild card" stuff, but no sooner does Z get his extension with the M's, that's when they revert back to how they were before.

All good things...

We're a half-game out of that second wildcard spot as of right now. When was the last time we could say that the M's were in playoff contention on September 1st? It sucks when we lose, especially when it's because the pitching goes wonky, but we're not out of this thing yet. I think people are a bit too eager to call "season over" because that's what we've been conditioned to expect this time of year for most of the last decade, but it's hard for me not to be optimistic when they're still in the race. Maybe thinking about the division title for a while there was too lofty, but with almost nothing but division rivals left on the schedule, the M's control their own destiny from here on out. It might not be a smooth ride all the time, but it's going to be an interesting one, which is something we haven't been able to say in a while.

But let us also remember the only reason we are a half game out of a playoff spot is because they added another wildcard spot. I am glad we have something to root for, but it seems MLB baseball is more responsible for that than the M's themselves. It only took a $240M signing to get within 4.5 of an actual playoff spot based on past rules.

I only give M's partial credit because we didn't really go out an at an impact bat in July nor did we add a needed arm in August after watching our starting staff implode this past month. They are still content as always to let things ride and see how things fall into place.

This series against the A's should tell a lot. They have lost 14 of 20. I still dont think chasing down the A's is impossible although its hard to tell if they are slumping or if they are just regressing badly.

Agreed. This series will be telling. If are pitching can rebound, then we have a great chance. If it doesn't, then it will be a real bummer. Game on.

The M's made moves based on the situation they were in. Maybe if that second wildcard isn't there, they make different moves at the deadline and secure bigger bats than Jackson and Morales to make a push for the wildcard. At the very least, there would have been more sellers with which to make a deal. I think the second wildcard spot is going to be around for a while, so at some point we're gonna have to lose the "well if the MLB hadn't gifted the Mariners with a second wildcard spot to go after, we wouldn't be talking playoffs" talk. The M's are in the playoff race. It doesn't matter that they would have been further out of it two years ago, they're in it now and it's ridiculous to bring up rules that no longer apply in an effort to downplay what they're doing now.

For years we've been waiting for this team to be relevant in September and now that they finally are, we have to hear this crap? Give me a break, man. Maybe they get that second wildcard spot and maybe they don't, but the situation the team is currently in beats the hell out of where they've been on September 1st for most of the last decade. Do they still have work to do to contend long-term? Absolutely. They had to rely on two unknowns on the starting staff all season and an offense that barely had a pulse for four months. That's gonna have to change for this team to be in contention for years to come, but it's exciting to go to the ballpark and watch this team for the first time in who knows how long. Try not to ruin it by being one of "those guys".

I am trying to be nice, but to call me 'those guys' makes me fucking irritated as all hell. I have been a fan for 37 years so when you get to that point you can start calling people out. You compared this year to past year when that isn't oranges to oranges with the new wildcard team.

That is redic. So if we are close to a wildcard spot we make moves for Jackson and Morales, but if we were further back we go for bigger bats? I apologize for commenting now. After reading that, I am understandably dealing with someone who wouldn't understand my point anyways so sorry for wasting both our time. SMH!!!!!!!!

Pretty sure he meant if AL West was a possibility in their eyes they would have gone after bigger bats.

That doesn't make sense though. Why would you make a big move while trying to chase for the division while doing little moves for the wild card? Its not like the division wouldn't be attainable so not sure how that would make sense. The goal of a buyer to put themselves in a position to win the playoffs, not get to the wild card game.

I'm only 32, so unless someone invents an aging machine that I can use, I'm not gonna catch up to you in terms of how long you've been a fan of this team. You've just been in a pissy mood all year and it finally got to me. I apologize for lashing out. I don't doubt that you care about this team, but it bothers the hell out of me that you had to marginalize what the M's are doing now by pointing out that the league had to add a playoff berth for the M's to be where they are in the race. There are two wildcard spots now. That's the reality we live in and the reality the M's work in. Should they get that second wildcard, I don't think they're going to apologize for getting it, so I don't think they deserve to be marginalized for being in that race.

You talk of being a fan for 37 years, which is great, but you look down on that second wildcard spot like you completely forgot that the implementation of the first wildcard spot is largely, if not completely, responsible for Seattle (and you) still having a professional baseball team to root for. If that wildcard spot doesn't exist in 1995, the Mariners probably don't see themselves as buyers, don't go out and get the guys they got in July and August to boost their playoff chances and we don't have "The Double", which is now looked back upon as the play that saved baseball in Seattle.

Man.

Some people in this thread are downright hilarious ... and downright dumb.

Glad the team is making them look like dummies though.

May have to excuse them since a few came over from ESPN when the forums got shut down... That site just breed stupidity. People always forget that baseball is a marathon and not a sprint (even though we're sprinting now) a lot of shit can happen over the course of the baseball season

The last 10 years of utter futility might have something to do with it as well.

Too early to ask. We'll see how things go when spots get clinched.

I'd like to see it happen, and right now, they look like they've gotten their act together, but everything happens with this team in long stretches. When they're good, it lasts a good number of games. Same goes when they're in a slump.

The decade of futility plays a big factor in all this, that's for sure, and that's why "Mariners" and "playoff spot" have to be jogged around in our heads 400 or 500 times before the possibility really sinks in.

I will say that I'm impressed with how this past week has been, but there's still a few weeks left, and anything can happen. Best of luck to 'em!

Now, if only the batters can summon up the will to perform whenever Felix is pitching...

Eh I know it's a few days later, but the A's are not in a position where ESPN should be giving them a 97%+ playoff chance. Seattle and Detroit could easily sneak up and nab that.
