(Extra) point of emphasis

Hobs' new reason for being inactive in FA -- If we sign someone we'll potentially blow the fourth round pick we're due for losing Anthony Collins.

God bless Geoff Hobson.

yes, of course, lets try some random middle rounder.
if Whit gets hurt (when Whit gets hurt) this will come back to haunt them.

Well then its a good thing they have to keep $29 million in cap room for draft picks AND to account for injuries. If Whit gets hurt they can always call Levi Jones.

The Bengals have money, but to keep throwing around they have nearly 30MM in true cap maybe slightly incorrect.

You do have to consider they will pay between 8MM and 9MM for draft picks.

They have to consider any clause that will cause a raise in pay, incentives, workout bonuses, etc...those are not factored in to the cap, so you have to hold about 3-4MM for that, plus if you need to sign a guy in the year due to injury to fill a spot...so another 2-3MM

If the Bengals had close to 28 (I think estimates were about 28 before the cuts, and before the signigns of Polak and Campbell, so lets say those wash out), they have about 15 MM left in actual cap space going forward. That would put them in th 90+% of usage of cap space for the year, not at the bare minimum of 89%.

However, with all that being said, I'm still not 100% how the carryover affects their spending. They also had about 8MM in carryover. If they are able to spend that cash, and not have it count towards this years' cap (which is what I think happens), the bengals had 28MM in cap space, but could actually have spent (could spend) 36MM.

With that in mind, it would have been nice to seem them push harder for Collins. Not really concerned as much about them losing MJ, but Collins could have really solidified the line.

Not upset about some of these F/A's not signing. I don't want Jared Allen on a 5 year deal. I wouldn't want to pay Hawkins 10MM over 2 years for a 3rd/4th/5th option at WR...

Going to be interesting to see how it plays out, but in the national media, people are actually praising the Bengals right now for their approach, despite losing Collins and MJ, and despite having cap room...so, something must be out there...

Again, we'll see....

Can someone clarify the cap carryover for me?
Is it:

A-Money NOT spent in 2013, thats carried over and counts against the cap in 2014
B-Money NOT spent in 2013, thats carried over and gives the team extra space.
C-Money Spent in 2013, but counts against the 2014 cap
D-Something else

I *think* it means that the Bengals cap for 2014 is 133 (NFL limit) but they can spend 141MM (8MM caryover) this year without penalty.

*I THINK*

The Bengals don't give a damn about carry over.

they are not going to invest in a "this is the year" year, so it doesn't matter.

Just out of curiosity...

How many NFL teams have invested in "This is the year" spending in the past, and actually won a S.B. that year?

Legit questions...I'm curious.

Seattle did it last year when they traded for Percy. They won the SB.

The Broncos may have done it last year. They most certainly are doing it now. They ended up in the SB last season and will most likely end up there next season as well.

The Patriots were in the AFCCG and did it this year with the Revis signing. Will probably end up there again this year, and have a chance to go to the SB.

Btw, nobody is asking the Bengals to take a "this is the year" approach to FA and sign players to ridiculous contracts. We'd be happy if they'd just spend to the cap. Don't twist the position.

Indeed.

I would love to know teams that went out there and busted cap, spent money, and just dropped it all for a year to go "all in".

I'm not talking about getting just that "one player" away type signing, but really going out and dropping money at multiple positions.

Eagles a few years ago.

Redskins have done it repeatedly, but not to go all-in to win, but because D.S. is a moron

I know GB has a few good runs in F/A a few years back, but not sure if that was an All-in type off-season....

It wouldn't even have to be limited to NFL...heck, how many pro sports teams in general do this and then fail to win....it would be a great study.

Why in the World would they sign Marshall Newhouse? If the reason why we didn't re-sign Anthony Collins was because they wanted to move Whitworth back LT then why sign a player who played that position for the Packers?

You continue to say this..

There are five teams with under 5MM of cap space. Are you trying to say that they somehow won't be able to sign their draft picks? The guys are going to sign.

In 2012 he was ranked 31st out of 32 LT's. His only shot is to move inside to LG

Agility: 5
Struggles to slide laterally and can be very stiff. Doesn't possess great body control or quickness. Can lose his balance when coming out of a three-point stance.

Pass Block Speed: 6
Newhouse has the size and quickness to be great in this area, but he misses on blocks and can give up the edge too often with poor timing and poor angles. Will reach outside the pads and get tagged for holding.

Pass Block Power: 6
Doesn't have great strength, but is strong enough to pin defenders when they try to bull-rush him. Inconsistent. He can improve his footwork as well as hand placement.

Run Blocking: 3
Lacks the strength to be a major force in this area. He shows good pad level, smart leverage and the quickness to get out in front of the play. The Packers consistently run away from Newhouse.

Move in Space: 4
Limited ability as a blocker on the move. He has the quickness to get out in space and good agility, but he doesn't see the field well and can be a liability when asked to get upfield on screens.

Pull/Trap: 5
Decent at getting out in front of the play. He's not great at leading on tosses and would rather be used coming back to his right to wham a defender crashing the backfield on traps.

Strength: 6
Good strength with a strong base and the proper bulk. He doesn't show great field strength when locking on with defenders. Would like to see stronger hands as well.

Technique: 5
Shows inconsistent play and can be run over too easily. He can improve his strength as well as hand placement and footwork. Needs to cut down on penalties. Will improve in that regard with better angles as he prepares for his third season.

Size: 9
A little short for a left tackle. He's 6'4" with long arms and big hands. Has a well-developed lower body strength at 319 lbs.

Health: 9
Showed up twice on the injury list this season but has played through small injuries.

Overall: 58
Newhouse had good games in 2011, but they were outnumbered by his poor performances. There is a considerable amount of potential here, but Newhouse has been thrown into the fire too soon as a starter. On a team with a lesser quarterback, he would have been exposed long ago.

Newhouse played 11 snaps at LT in their playoff game against the 49ers.

He played 5 games with meaningful snaps at RT. He graded out negatively in each of those games (-10.0) with the exception of one where he graded out at 0.2.

89.9% PBE. Pretty bad. Only a handful of tackles had a worse pass blocking efficiency.
