Brock Purdy is not Joe Montana. But....

Hes played well ever since they started him. He was undefeated in the regular season last year for like 7-8 games and his team is 9-3 now. That’s like 16/17-3.
We had a poster here who claimed Jimmy G. was a great QB because the 49ers won a ton of games.

...if Joe Montana's teams were playing today people would say the same stuff:

- Doesn't have a big arm
- Kind of smallish (1.5 inches taller than Purdy)
- Not a high draft pick (3rd round #82)
- Gets all his yards from Jerry Rice YAC, short passes (this is actually BS even as a fact...Purdy's % of yards from YAC is around the same as every other good QB)
- Has a great team/system/coach around him

Just sayin'
49ers are #5 for total yardage after catch and #1 for ratio of yards after catch so not like every other good QB. Another stat that catches my eye is the 49ers have the lowest percentage of dropped passes in the league and it's not close.

Sure, it's a "someone else said this, but not me" strawman, but let's look at it anyway. It's not about pure win numbers.

Purdy is in the MVP discussion, while Jimmy never even sniffed a pro bowl.

And don't even bother comparing their numbers in the playoffs. Purdy is the runaway winner. Hell, Purdy's first ever playoff game was miles better than any of Jimmy's 6 tries in the postseason.

In this offense, Purdy is a significantly better Qb than Jimmy was.

I think the difficult part people have with Purdy is that it's really difficult to appreciate the mental aspect of QBing. For example against the Eagles one of the short throws that Deebo cashed in for a TD on the surface just looked like he threw an easy throw to an open Deebo that did all the work but it was actually his 4th read on the play.
4th read? Was it a prevent defense or what? Who has that kind of time to throw in the NFL?

Prudy-Mr Irrelevant was a refreshing story and seems like a good guy to boot. He's been pretty good, but hope those singing his praises rein it just a wee bit.

According to Mike Sando of the Athletic, 48.5% of Purdy's passing yards have come after the catch. That's a tick above the NFL average (47%), but still below each of the last three MVP winners, including Patrick Mahomes in 2022 (54%).

I put the graph up with actual stats, folks can judge it for themselves.

Yes, as @Jikkle pointed out, Deebo was Purdy's 4th read on the play. Not prevent at all--Philly has a 5 man rush coming as part of a fire zone blitz.

The play and read progression is explained in this video. I have taken the liberty of starting it right at the Deebo TD play.

We don’t have the luxury of seeing Purdy in any other spot than the one he is in. From what I can see he’s done a great job. In the end, that’s all that really matters. Troy Aikman wasn’t the sexiest of QBs in his era. Had some years early where he looked meh. QBs need to have talent but they need a team and structure around them to make it work.

Not in his first two years he didn't

Montana was a 2nd year player too once.
You are the one who brought it up. Montana isn't known for being smallish and not having a big arm. He's known for his multiple SBs

Honestly, if you put Justin Herbert (still being a top 10 pick that the media seems to love) on the Niners and he produced identical stats to Purdy's, he'd be in everyone's MVP discussion, but for some reason, Purdy continues to be discounted. Having played a half dozen playoff teams this year, he leads the league in passer rating, QBR, completion %, yds per attempt, TD %, etc.
If you put Herbert on the 49ers and he produced identical stats to Purdy, I'd wonder if he was injured...

and I like Purdy
