I pointed that out as an example of how things like that are usually done. That is just the way it is whether it works out or not. The reason it is almost always done is because of the money involved.

But to answer your question, I think someone will offer him a minimum of 2 years, more than likely 3, for $45 mil or so. And this is something the Rangers just aren't willing to do. Nor should they IMO.

And I think all this "we've gotta get a big bat" is somewhat overrated. Kind of like you asked, "we were 3rd in the majors in RBI last season. So what does a big bat get us, 2nd?"

DeShields earned that job outright. If his production goes down, leaving an opening for someone else to take it from him, then so be it. But he was great this year, and their record was very good when he was leading off. DeShields and Choo were a good 1-2 punch at the top of the order.

I think Prince just plain flat ran out of gas at the end of the season.

I know Hamilton is injury prone, and can be a head case sometimes, but I liked his attitude down the stretch. He didn't say much. I think Banister will keep him in line. He seems like the kind of guy that can sniff out the bullshit. Hamilton's production wasn't that bad in his limited time, either. Stretched out over a full season--I'd take it. He just needs consistency. Hamilton made some great defensive plays, too.

I'm not worried about anything about Josh except his health. If you're hoping for a full season of production from him then I've got an exciting opportunity for you to buy into some swamp land.

I'll take a full season with 2 DL trips. I'll consider that a victory. If he has a full, normal spring training with the team, I think he will get off to a good start.

Wasting money on desperate veterans usually ends up just that wasting money. They hardly ever produce anything of value. So instead of wasting 9 to 12M on a couple of desperate pitchers why not spend that money on one quality pitcher like Gallardo. And then bring in the old reliable guy Colby too. Then you have a rotation of Hamels, Holland, Gallardo, Perez & Lewis that gets you started out on the right foot at the beginning of the season and then have the luxury of Yu appearing around the 1st of June and working his way back to full strength. It sings for me but I'm just one fan

How much are you anticipating it'll take to bring Gallardo back? Because I think it'll take more than 9-12m a year, and he'll want at least 3 years.

The rotation we can write down in ink are only Hamels, Perez, and Holland. Darvish probably won't be full strength until August. So the Rangers are going to be pretty much in the same situation they were in this year--be good enough until they reinforcements arrive, in this case, Darvish. They are going to need at least 2 more starting pitchers, and that's if Holland doesn't trip over his dog again.

To me our problem isn't shown in season long RBI totals. We have a lot of games where we simply don't score very many runs and then we have a lot of games where we score a whole lot of runs and that gets our total runs scored total up. We are too inconsistent.

Of the 5 teams to make the postseason in the AL this year we were worst at the number of games where we score 2 or fewer runs. We did so 54% more often than the Blue Jays did. They did so 35 times and we scored 2 or fewer runs 54 times.

Then there is always the chance that our four biggest run producers could all decline from what they did this season. Three of them are at a prime age to do so. That certainly isn't a given, but I would be surprised if their combined numbers didn't decline somewhat in 2016. The other is Mitch and he had a career year and I am not sure if he can duplicate it.

I would not be surprised to see us win fewer games next season if we simply stand pat. That might or might not be good enough to make the postseason. My goal in strengthening our offense is to become the favorites to win the WS and not just squeak into the playoffs and hope that anything can happen.

Interesting stats. Our biggest problem is situational hitting, to me anyway. We were tied for 23rd for runners left in scoring position per game. So this is what you're talking about with those long droughts I think. And we've got to get better at this, no doubt about it.

It wouldn't shock me to see this team make fewer off-season moves than some anticipate. I do think we'll attempt to add a catcher, and I do think we'll move Moreland, along with resigning Napoli though.

There has been some discussion about when to expect Darvish back. I believe guys are returning earlier than they used to. Martin Perez made his first rehab start 1 year and 22 days after his surgery. 38 days later he was pitching in the big leagues. Darvish would begin pitching in rehab on April 8th and would be in the big leagues on May16th if he is on the same schedule. I think Strausburg returned to the big leagues just barely over a year after his surgery. I know it varies, but I think there is nothing wrong with thinking there is a better than 50% chance that he makes it back by mid May.

Of course there can always be setbacks, but then that is the case with everyone. Any of the players could tweak something and be delayed some coming out of ST as well.
