Is Nolan the most under appreciated player in terms of national recognition? Regardless of the Coors factor the dude can hit and iMO the best defensive infielder in baseball.

I don't know that he is under-appreciated. If I could have my choice between him and Bryant, I would have to think long and hard about who to take. Dude is an absolute beast.

It wouldn't take me long at all. I would take Arenado without a doubt. 3 GG's in only 4 years in the league, only a year older than Bryant and he is a better all-around player and has much more discipline at the plate. Both great but all-around it is an easy choice.

Unfortunately the Coors Factor is always gonna quiet the national hype...Especially when you get a player like Tulo, who was the last to get major hype, crash hard after he leaves there

But with that said, I think Arenado is a legit superstar anywhere he plays

Meh, I'm waiting for the real awards to come out. Hopefully they're out before Thanksgiving because this is way too long to wait. I posted a thread like 2-3 months ago that Hendricks will be the Cy winner and Bryant will be the MVP. I took a lot of heat for it but now I might be right.

For me they became irrelevant about 10 years ago when I showed up early to a Phillies game and got to see Bobby Abreu presented with his Gold Glove.

Yes, I said Bobby freaking Abreu. You can look it up....

Bryant: .292/.385/.554, 149 wRC+
Arenado: .294/.362/.570, 124 wRC+

The stat lines are comparable until you account for their ballparks (see wRC+). It really isn't even close. Arenado strikes out less, but Bryant's only played two seasons in the majors. He's already cut his K% down from 30.6% to 22%. Arenado might be a better defender, but Bryant still rates as an above average defender. I don't think that defense makes up for the offensive gap.

And even though Bryant isn't much of a base stealer, he grades as an excellent baserunner (7.3 BsR, 6th in MLB per Fangraphs) while Arenado rates as a below average baserunner (-1.1). There's also the matter of GIDPs... Bryant hit into only three of them. That's insane, especially for someone who bats where he does in the lineup. Arenado hit into 17 this year.

Put all of that together and WAR has him about three full wins above Arenado.

Pretty reasonable selection this year. Doesn't really seem to be any glaring omissions IMO, but it is a pretty trivial award.

AL East is full of stud defensive outfielders. Pillar, Kiermaier, JBJ, Betts, and Gardner. Hicks and Souza are also pretty solid.

The offensive gap doesn't favor Bryant though, they essentially equals except Nolan strikeouts much less and drives in more runs (I know hitters ballpark but that is still half the games). I will still take Nolan overall as a player, can't go wrong with either though.

Strikeouts mean nothing in regards to their actual production. Those K's account for only 22% of his plate appearances. Even with more strikeouts, Bryant still produced a much better OBP and comparable power numbers. The most important thing you can do at the plate is not make an out.

And it's 81 of 162 games... that's a lot. Especially when Coors is a lot more favorable to offense than Wrigley is.

He's rated as one of the top defensive players over the last decade and has already won several Gold Gloves, but OK. Offense should have nothing to do whatsoever with a defensive award.

As a Cubs fan, I was a little surprised that Rizzo won the GG at first but Russell did not win it at short. In my opinion, Russell is our best defensive player...
