i like this

Jim: we are in the 16th round of the shoot out with no goals scored.
Bob:I thought when Tim Thomas was standing behind the net there was a chance.
Jim: Crosby was in the blue paint when that puck rolled off his stick and out to center ice.
Bob: This one may come down to the mascots, again

i'm very against that.. i dont think the net shape should change at all.. if you want to make the simple change to increase scoring, cut down on equipment size.. i think it would look very goofy if they changed the dimensions of the net..

Why? People have such strong reactions to this idea, but it's only to compensate for the massive padding goalies now wear. Seems to me it would just be putting the gap players have to shoot into back closer to where it was for the vast majority of the 20th century. Hell, the gap might still be smaller even with an enlarged net.

Lots of good ideas in the thread.

I like Dare and Mattola's ideas for minor/major 2-minute penalties. It does make sense to differentiate the incidental from the naferious.

I also think the 3-2-1-0 point system idea. If they had a better overtime format, maybe they could just do wins and losses. Encouraging teams to play for ties to get a point at the end of regulation makes for boring game endings.

little behind on my response.. weekends eh?

anywho, i just dont like the idea of changing the 'look' of hockey.. i think making a bigger net would just look ridiculous on the ice.. i mean i guess you could just increase it a little bit, like an inch or two in every direction and you compensate for the pad enlargement.. but what i dont understand is why make the net bigger? just make the pads like they used to be..

i dont want to watch hockey games that are 6-5 all the time.. when they're rare they're exciting, sure.. but i'd much rather watch a hard fought 3-2 or 2-1 game where every goal is critical.. goals aren't as special when there's a bunch of em..

and i HATE hearing the argument that 'hockey is boring because its so low scoring'.. if people really want more points scored they should just change to football rules and give them 7 points per goal.. would it be more entertaining for them if it was 21-14 instead of 3-2?

nah, make them 6 points and then an extra point shot at an empty net from behind the defensive blue line. Two-point conversion behind the opposing goal line. ;)

To be honest, when it comes to the league wanting to increase scoring and whatnot, I don't think there's a need to. If fans can't get into a 3-2 finish the majority of the time, they won't get into a 4-3 average.

I like the way the breakdown is now where a really good goal-scorer can score 30 goals, the best score 50+. The really good offensive players can average a point per game and the best can hit that 100+ mark. It makes us appreciate the goals that are scored and makes a big save even more impactful.

If the average netminder posts 10+ shutouts in a season, then we have a problem, but I think we're good where we are.

Not sure if we can post charts here, but Imma try...

Comparison between the old tie system, the 4-on-4 loser point system, and the SO system.

1998-99|1999-00|2003-04|2005-06|2010-11
Total OT Games|223|261|315|281|297
G Won in OT|61|115|145|136|148
G Past OT|162|146|170|145|149
% of OTW|27.35|44.06|46.03|48.40|49.83

~50% of OT games are solved with five minutes of 4 on 4. Another five minutes at 4 on 4 or 3 on 3 should do the job.

EDIT: Can't do tables here. Oh, well.

I'd rather see 5-on-4 power plays with an empty net than watch 3-on-3.

Punishment line - Nay, faceoffs are fine the way they are.
Hybrid icing - Nay, change it to automatic icing. The last thing we need to do is add another element of human judgment to the game.
Hand passes expanded - Nay, kind of defeats the purpose of using sticks doesn't it? I think hand passes should be banned altogether.
Full minor service - Yay, I do like this change
OT change - I'll be honest I'm indifferent on this one. I'd be OK with 10 mins of 4 on 4 too.
