Sounds like a reasonable deal with an opt out after 4 years for Tomas. We have to assume Trumbo will be gone soon.

Trumbo to an AL team that could use a 1B/DH for a SP would be ideal. Our OF is a log-jam right now.

Ehh, with Goldy at 1st and our OF now loaded it wouldn't make much sense to keep him. He's better suited for the AL. Lots of power but can't do much else and sucks defensively in the OF.

Ages 21-23 in Cuba:

Abreu - .356/.478/.681/1.159
Cespedes - .303/.384/.564/.948
Tomas - .293 /.350/.523/.873

Tomas may actually be the weakest of the last 3 sluggers, offensively. Who knows how this translates to MLB, but the Dbacks will find out.

I would have been okay with it if the Braves would have signed him, but since they didn't I will rationalize it by saying that they didn't need another swing and miss bat in their lineup.

Except younger with a much higher upside and he has shown an ability to hit for average. Either way, it gives them depth to make a much needed trade for pitching.

Well it also depends on how much one puts into Cuban batting averages...someone pointed out earlier the averages of Abreu and Cespedes in Cuba, which have been a good 40ish higher than what they've hit in MLB. So if we have Tomas who was a career .289 career hitter in Cuba and never hit above .298, it might be more likely that he won't be hitting for a good average in MLB.

For what it's worth, Fangraphs' scouting report predicts his upside as a .275 hitter, although with good power (25-30HR range).

Does he get to take his Cuban "Meds" in MLB????

Tomas is now looking like Trumbo 2.0...A DH bat destined to wear out his welcome in the National League...
When he was shopping his services, I thought he had a ceiling as a poor-mans Kevin Mitchell.

Only 2 years in, but so far that looks about right.

Mitchell was a career .284/.360/.520 hitter. Tomas is a career .272/.309/.462 hitter. I'd say Tomas has been a poor man's poor man's Mitchell.

LOL

Again, only 2 years in. After 2 seasons, Mitchell's hash line was...

.279/.347/.471

Tomas is showing more power trend, but Mitchell hadn't blown up yet with his power stroke.

Mitchell could also draw the occasional walk (around 9% his first two years). Tomas walked in 5.5% of his plate appearances this season and I don't see that figure improving significantly anytime soon.

Tomas could have a couple of years like Trumbo did this year (47 home runs and a 120 OPS+), but the low OBP (.316) and poor defense had him worth about 2 WAR.

So you are saying Tomas is not an exact clone of Mitchell?

Damn, my comp made before he stepped foot on American soil was clearly totally off base...
