So let it begin--the 2014-15 WVU Basketball Campaign. I am looking forward to seeing this years squad as I feel we are more athletic than we have been in a long time. My question is: Are we smart? Smart basketball will beat teams who are more athletic than you are. At least to a certain extent. I wouldn't expect the Princeton Tigers to beat Kentucky Wildcats but it can and has happened. So what can we expect from this group? Lets look at the roster:
NO NAME POS HT WT CLASS HOMETOWN 0 Jaysean Paige G 6-2 200 JR Jamestown, NY 1 Jonathan Holton F 6-7 220 SR Miami, FL 2 Jevon Carter G 6-2 185 FR Maywood, IL 3 Juwan Staten G 6-1 190 SR Dayton, OH 4 Daxter Miles Jr. G 6-3 185 FR Baltimore, MD 5 Devin Williams F 6-9 255 SO Cincinnati, OH 10 Chase Connor G 6-1 190 SO Shady Spring, WV 11 Nathan Adrian F 6-9 235 SO Morgantown, WV 12 Tarik Phillip G 6-3 185 SO Brooklyn, NY 13 James Long G 5-11 190 SO Charleston, WV 14 Gary Browne G 6-1 195 SR Cupey, PR 20 Brandon Watkins F 6-9 245 SO Decatur, GA 21 BillyDee Williams F 6-6 215 JR Orlando, FL 23 Tyrone Hughes G 6-0 185 JR Chicago, IL 30 Richard Romeo G 6-0 190 JR White Sulphur Springs, WV 34 Kevin Noreen F 6-10 245 SR Minneapolis, MN 45 Elijah Macon F 6-9 240 FR Columbus, O
So you can see there are some new faces around here in Macon, Billy Dee Williams, Phillip, Miles, Carter Holton and Paige. Of this group, I really like Macon, Paige, and Philip. They bring good energy and have the ability to score. As for how this group fares, who knows? I suspect it will take a little time to build some chemistry but if the shellacking of Shepard is a harbinger to come---I would bet we are going to press and press some more. I think this club will use 9-10 players consistently with that kind of pressure in a 40 minute game.
The jury is still out but I say somehow HUGGS gets them back to the NCAA's. The talent is there and Huggs will have time to teach and groom this bunch before the brunt of the Big 12 schedule. Here's 3 cheers for a 20 win season! Lets Go Mountaineers!
