Four best Kawhi Leonard trades we'd like to see

Interesting article. Although I feel like Kevin Pelton was asked to come up with a trade scenario for the Lakers and simply doesn't think the Lakers should trade for him. He concedes that other teams will likely offer more. I also wish that all the writers factored in salary cap decisions the same way.

That Heat trade is probably the most interesting and the closest to something that could actually happen.

It's an interesting read... however, in each trade scenario, I found myself thinking that San Antonio wouldn't agree to such a deal.

Yeah. Same here. The Heat deal was the closest but they would probably need to throw in a pick.

That Celtic deal would lead to a crazy, amazing, free form and positionless starting line-up for Boston though:
  • Jaylen Brown
  • Jason Tatum
  • Gordon Hayward
  • Kawhi Leonard
  • Al Horford

I love that idea.

Boston is clearly giving up the most in those trades IMO.

But if you can add a guy like Kawhi, you just figure it out.

I love when fans say that they love a trade but then argue that their team is giving up the most.

There is a 0.0% chance that the Spurs would trade Kawhi for Kyrie.

the most of the 4 trade examples.

Bos > Phi > Mia > LAL (was the guy drunk for this one? not even Josh Hart or Zubac? Seriously?)

Yeah the Lakers one was just strange like he really believe the Lakers should even bother.

Kyrie is the most proven talented player of the bunch certainly. But he has some serious health issue that drastically lowers his value.

Anyway, this is fun to speculate but when you consider this...

The Spurs' Kawhi options, plus more offseason moves
Keep in mind that Leonard is not DPVE eligible if traded, and teams acquiring him can extend his contract starting at only $24.1 million in the first year and six months from when traded, a projected $8 million less than his max salary as a free agent would start.

If he's traded, Leonard would lose between $30 million and $70 million in his next contract. The range varies depending on whether he signed with the team he was acquired by ($30M) or a team with cap space ($70M) as a free agent.

There is absolutely no chance that Leonard is going to be willing to lose that kind of coin by being traded.

I agree that it seems unlikely.

I'm curious how the team feels about the whole situation.

Kawhi is a free agent soon. All the Lakers have to do is wait...

Get PG and Lebron this summer, Leonard the next. And it won't cost the Lakers a single player or pick.

Unless he signs the Supermax.

Could happen. The best thing for him would be to do so in fact. But how happy is he in San Antonio?
His sister has been posting quite frequently on Instagram saying everything is fine and he's still injured. It's been confirmed that it is his sister, by the way.

One thing I can say for certain is that the Lakers won't be getting Lebron, PG, and Kawhi.

It would probably take the C's giving up more.

C's already have top end talent... it's just injured.

That issue aside... I really, really like what I'm seeing from Jaylen Brown this post season. Guy has been a difference maker out there.

As an outsider: yes, I'm concerned about Kawhi's long term health at this point and that factors in to my thinking.

Agreed.

Either side, IMO, would have to be getting an offer too good to pass up... and neither side is likely to get or give that offer. Therefore, no trade.

The Celtics don't have top end talent though. Kyrie and Hayward are not close to Kawhi's level if Kawhi is right. The gap between the truly elite players and the really good ones is large.

Kawhi is elite. Kyrie and Hayward are not there.

Sure they can!

And they will keep their young players and resign Randle too because they will all take $12 million a year for the priviledge to play for the Lakers.

At least according to some extremely unrealistic fans.

It is kinda amusing how some Laker fans think that the privilege of playing for the Lakers is all that is needed to draw all the top talent to LA.

I am perfectly fine admitting that a healthy Kawhi is better than either Kyrie or Hayward... I think we have a case here of me using a term like "top end" and thinking one thing and you using the term and thinking something else.

Is it impossible for them to get PG, Lebron and Leonard in the space of 2 years?
