I think it was pretty easy in a 6 team league but since expansion NOTHING. I bet any team on your list of failures would have multiple cups if they came out in the 6 team league. hell the freaking Senators have a Cup in the NHL league so what are they even doing on your list by your logic. the thing is I consider the leafs to be very successful by league standards with or without a cup same with the sharks and canucks and I consider the tampa bay lightning to be a failed franchise even with a cup

It was so easy that in the 50 years before expansion they still won more cups than everyone except for the Habs. If it was so easy for a team to win 13 cups why did Detroit, Boston, New York and Chicago only win 16 combined during the same period?

1 - win in a 30 team league and your argument is valid. also alot of finals were best of 3 not always best of 7 so the chances of winning even greater.

2 - yep but when you have 90 years to do it I would expect more than one cup for the leafs. the bruins won in 1929, 1939, 1941 which had a 7 team league . the rangers 1928, 1933, 1940 which had a 7 team league . but Ill even give you this argument since it wasnt 6 teams as in the 6 team league years pretty much all the best players went to montreal and toronto. everything was stacked in those teams favor in the early years which is why I only take anything after expansion into 16 teams way more serious in success.

3 - its very relevant. the Ottawa senators have won a cup in the NHL as the Ottawa senators. not at the Ottawa millionaires or the ottawa st pats or the ottawa whatevers. the SENATOR franchise won a cup in the NHL league. whether they folded or not they have that history and that logic DICTATES to you Success.

How can the chances for both teams increase?

I'd probably give this to the Coyotes or Thrashers/Jets. Florida has a Finals appearance at least.

Maybe the best players in those times were almost all Canadian played a factor in the fact that the two Canadian teams winning the most then.

Yes and no. The Habs and Leafs monopolized the players from their respective regions but it's not like the American original six teams were composed of yanks. Still mostly Canadian. Howe, Hull, Lindssay, etc. played for American clubs.

Oh and for the record this thread sucks.

Thread was more fun when we were discussing teams that went under.

Then why don't you declare that you are going to ignore the thread until we bring it back around to your liking?

The Thrashers / Jets are on a pretty good streak. 14 years, 1 playoffs made, 0 playoff games won.

I thought Atlanta Flames went to Calgary and the Winnipeg Jets went to Phoenix, before Atlanta came back to Winnipeg???

Fuggit ... nm LOL

Troll thread is troll.

BTW, the only answer is the Pittsburgh Penguins. They have done so little compared to the amount of talent they've had over the last 25 (minus the 2001-2004) years. :p

Oh and for the record this thread sucks.

Is it one of the worst threads ever though? Some threads die with just one post (like my collectable plate discussion one), should they count or do threads need to have more posts to be truly bad? Do threads from the swamp count or was the slate wiped clean during the switch?

Some bad threats have good posts in them. Who could forget that "NHL needs to get back on the swamp to succeed" thread where one north if the border poster admitted that it burned so bad when he urinated that he sat down to go? Great stuff. (side note - did there pills work?)

Some threads seem great at first but don't stand the rest of time. Like 43's "Vista sets a new standard of greatness" thread or Elocomotive's "Percy Jackson will be bigger than Harry Potter" thread? Do they count retroactively?

Lately what makes a thread bad? Is indifference bad or actual dislike more important?

Thrashers. Management was indifferent towards finding a winning team and the team did nothing. Being on the Thrashers was kind of like being on probation until you got signed to a better team.
