Pretty good stuff to me.
I think a lot of that had to do with the notion of PARADIGMS. The NFL had made a key rule change back in 78 and that was the 5 yard yard rule. It loosened the passing game up BUT there was one coach that adapted. Air Coryell and 78 was when that became the slow paradigm shift.Great video.
One thing the narrator fails to acknowledge when he mentions social media is that Elway also played in an era where you were allowed to hit the QB and any eligible receiver who was trying to catch the ball. Sort of like that penalty we saw on Brandon Jones against the Bills...That would have just been another incomplete pass back in Elway's day. No weak-ass NFFL (National Flag Football League) penalty. In Elway's time we saw numerous hits like that every game every week.
So would Elway's picks have been an issue in the social media era? Maybe. But if Elway in his prime were playing in this era he'd be throwing for 4500 yards, 35 TDs, and under 10 picks year after year after year after year.
So there's that.
air coryell was also the first team to feature the TE outside the numbers.I think a lot of that had to do with the notion of PARADIGMS. It took a while too for coaches to adjust.
Dan Reeves was an elite OC for Tom Landry in Dallas and he was quite effective WITH ROGER STAUBACH. Elway’s idol. I'm rather certain he saw working with the coach of his idol Roger was quite appealing to him.
It was even rougher on QBs in the 60s and 70s. Along with that there was a lot more banging the receivers before the pass was thrown. I don't care if it was Brady, Manning, or any QB they would have taken some beatings in those decades.Great video.
