Nothing is more deadly than a rise ball in softball. They're virtually impossible to see coming (the ball is rising regardless) and adjusting up is a bit more difficult than extending for a slider.

Rise balls are tough to catch. I don't hit them well, but then again, I'm decidedly a low-ball hitter even in baseball, so that may have something to do with it.

The only thing I don't like about softball is the lefties who start running out of the box while they swing. That kills your outer-half coverage. All you have to do is pitch those girls away and they'll strike out. I would have none of it as a coach.

There are other sports that need to be removed too, most notably men's basketball.

That's not really the point of the discussion though.

Actually, it kind of is. When one (or two) countries constantly dominate competition, they usually drop it. Basketball is what started everything that is wrong with the Olympics anyhoo.

You're right, another discussion :)

You're right. It's just frustrating that as a woman I can't watch those sports at their highest level. And you know what? Upsets happen. Builds sports. When about half the participating countries (complete estimate) barely allow women to wear shorts, how can we expect them to field teams? It's NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. I'd wager softball is 1A with soccer in the US for sport participation...so it kills me that the ceiling is D1 college ball. Also, look at soccer! Women's soccer is still growing! You know why? Because of the olympic/world cup stage. Gotta let it grow at that level.

Which is the best argument for keeping it. Teach the neanderthals that gender has no effect on the quality of the human or what they can accomplish. Kind of the point of the Olympics ain't it?

What I don't like is that it takes away one more path for these girls. In the league I coached in, there is a girl who plays. Easily as good or better than most of the boys. Next year is Pee Wee which is when parents of kids with exceptional ability start thinking of long term plans. High School, College or Junior, Pro. And some people are already talking about it with some of these kids.

This girl is not going to have any option past College to strive for. None. Sad, she's a good kid and one hell of a hockey player.

I understand why you say basketball started it but the reason pro's were allowed is because some countries (the USSR hockey team comes to mind) fielded teams that were basically pro's, they just didn't play in what were considered pro leagues. The USSR hockey teams that won medals before pro's were allowed, ie NHL players, were "amateur" players but in reality pro's. The original dream team was awesome. The US basically showed when we put our best players on the team which other countries were doing not amateurs, we kicked ass. I would like the Olympics to go back to true amateurs.

All true, but as was also proven in hockey - they CAN be beaten.

And now, the international pro doesn't exist any more. College or junior players should be in. Or anyone not in a major pro league (NHL, AHL, KHL, SEL, etc.)

Then when in the hell are they going to get rid of diving?

China wins the Gold 99% of the time.

As long as there are American, Brazilian, Australian and Canadian college women in spandex, it must stay. Non-negotiable Olympic rules.

Exactly. And the poor girl is sitting there playing well with boys at the same age, watching them move on and strive for the big goals while she has a glass, well...not even glass, ceiling. THE OLYMPICS ARE IT FOR WOMEN. Even in the other sports like basketball, etc. the Olympics are really the be all end all.
